So I have a growing collection of #33’s and they all possess an oval shank and are all about 135mm long with a pot shaped bowl and the bit can vary from very short, say 1/4 of the total shank length up to but not quite 1/2 the shank/bit total. #32’s on the other hand are all about 145mm long and have a billiard shaped bowl mostly with some aesthetic license and their bit is always at or around 1/3 of the shank/bit total. That should be clear as mud for you 🤣
That's actually very helpful! I've been going off of length and plumpness of the shank. Seem like those two are 33s then.

127mm on the dot. 36g. Stem is 3/4 of the shank.

Long stem 33 or short shank 32?
I think it’s a 32 ?
I’ve seen proportions go slender making them appear longer and also fatter like this one. Regardless it’s a fantastic looking pipe and I personally like it more robust like this example.

I think that's a 32 like Paul above but its a lovely one and should smoke like a champ.
Thanks, guys! I agree that it's a stellar looking pipe. I've been wanting a 33 in this size and weight but I don't think it would be possible unless it was like 4" long, which I would be very happy with. This 32 fits the bill perfectly (thanks, @Two Pipes Crossing!).

I've been trying to find examples of Castello canadians in the natural vergin. I lean towards the 33 in many cases but some that I like don't seem to be 33s. Would you guys call these two Canadians a shape 32 or 33?

I'd say the top is definitely a 32 to me now.

The specs of the bottom one also says 32 to me but the really stubby stem makes me think it might qualify as a 33. Would you guys agree?

Great thread. Here's my Castello. It's my favorite and one of the "una castello per 10 anni" series that came out throughout the 1990s. This is the 1997 shape 215. I bought it in 1998 at Up Down Smoke Shop in Chicago and it's been a champ all this time.View attachment 422480View attachment 422481
A very special and beautiful pipe. Check out this link if you want the whole series and were an early investor in Nvidia.;)

I thought my pipe acquisition days were over but I saw this shape 65 vergin at Tabaccheria Corti and couldn't resist. According to Luca, the pipe was in Kino's personal collection. He sold it to Luca in January of this year, four months before he, Kino, passed away. There is no castle logo one the stem but Luca reckons it's about 20 years old. I like the grooves on the stummel that run into the stem but I especially like the mellow color and the fact that the rustication is relatively flat and refined. These photos are from TC's website.Screenshot 2025-10-14 at 3.37.40 PM.pngScreenshot 2025-10-14 at 3.37.54 PM.pngScreenshot 2025-10-14 at 3.38.05 PM.pngScreenshot 2025-10-14 at 3.38.14 PM.png

Here’s a preview of my contribution to next weeks Collectors Showcase in Vegas. Epoca’s from my non core shape collections. A wide variety of shapes and carving styles. Some are very rare and a couple are magnificent examples.
Stunning Dave, seeing these pipes makes me realise that my collection is “Rookie Status” 🤣

Silly question, but you mention the mellow colour if the raw briar ; do you plan to smoke it?

Or just one to keep for the collection to avoid it darkening over time?

Thanks but in the world of Castello I’m a blip on the radar. I haven’t added a pipe in the collection in years but there are at least 4 pipes out there in collections that I desperately want. I’m eternally hopeful that they will shake loose sooner than later as I’m (or they’re) not buying green bananas.

Haha. I'm smoking it right now. Nothing beats a virgin, not to mention vergin, Castello for flavor! To answer your question: the mellow color is due to age but I have no fear of darkening it with smoke and handling.:)
