I give my bird report every time I post in the "What Are You Smoking?" thread, but I have very few actual photos. Here is arguably the best one I have, taken by my wife. Dark-eyed junco. This one slammed into our sliding glass door, and was dazed for a spell. He/she eventually made it up onto the railing of the deck to finish resting before flying off, and during this time, she got both a far away shot and a GREAT close-up. You can see the sky and the mountainside reflected off of the bird's eyeball in the 2nd photo.

In the middle of a big city, we have a hawk that patrols our neighborhood. I actually saw it sitting on a power line which made me laugh a bit as it was a big birdie. I'll get a pic if I have a chance but he's not photogenic and manages to find ways to sit that make it impossible to get a good photo.

Hawks DO eat cats. When I was in medical school, I once visited a classmate in the varsity's student residence. There was another student living there who had rescued a hawk with a broken wing or something, and he fed the bird cats. He set cat food as bait and waited a floor or two above, and when the stray cats came to eat it he dropped a brick on them from above. He then took the dead cat to the hawk and walked away.

Oh, we keep them inside. All of our cats are small domestics and wild rabbits are quite a bit larger than them. Good thing my widows are insured, the damned thing cracked a large pane when it hit.

This is a pipiwharauroa. It’s distinctive call marks the coming of spring. Unfortunately they also like windows. View attachment 112102

I've heard of people who cut out silhouettes of sparrow hawks (aka kestrel) and place them in their windows to scare small birds so they don't hit the window. These silhouettes are available online. If you don't have kestrels there, some other predator would work.

I've heard they do this in grade schools, which have large windows, so your kids might find it fun also to make them.

Here's an example from a hardware store, available commercially now:
