We have lots of birds here, but no photos on hand. We have had brown thrashers in the yard, which are supposed to be fussy about their environment. Various tree-fulls of extended families of crows I talk to. Around lakes and ponds, great blue herons are fairly common, and egrets, and cormorants. Although bluebirds were featured in children's books growing up in Illinois, I never saw one until I lived in N.C. We also get a thrill with the occasional hummingbird hovering over a colorful blossom, usually red. One of the man-made lakes in the area has a regular population, several pairs, of bald eagles. We have goldfinches, the usual robins, bluejays, chickadees, kinglets, cowbirds, and others. For decades, I've enjoyed the vocal performances of mockingbirds, not to mention their fantastic summersaults in midair to show off as they sing, but in the last four or five years, I've seen decisively fewer. Not good news. Also, last year I began seeing groups of vultures in town, picking at dead squirrels and such, a sight usually seen out in the country with deer carcasses. Fewer of them lately, but quite a change in habit for a while. Down at the coast, brown pelicans abound, along with various kinds of gulls, and prairie warblers. Various hawks, especially red tails are regulars in town and country. The females are large, almost look like eagles.
