My question really is: After smoking some of your pipe and putting it down, after about how long will it taste bad to pick it back up and smoke it? I mean, can you leave it for several hours? How about overnight? What do YOU do?

Relighting your pipe after an extended break is called the Delayed Gratification Technique (DGT). I will sometimes pack a few pipes before bed and smoke a little out of each, to start my next day off. I sometimes find mostly unsmoked pipes laying about all the time. They are my favorite smokes, usually because it gives me a chance to try to figure out exactly what blend I had packed into it.

Latakia, sometimes, doesn't do well.... some blends. And, I imagine aromatics would suck with the DGT.

This probably reflects my skill level, but I find that the more unburned tobacco remains in the chamber, the better it tastes when I pick it up again. So, if there's only 1/4 or 1/3 of a bowl left and I'm interrupted, I'll honestly only finish it later to avoid wasting tobacco. I have yet to have a transcendant experience from deliberately doing DGT. (But I don't doubt the people who do!)

I dont think it usually tastes "Bad" but a lot of blends I find dont taste quite as good. That said, I also prefer the first half to two thirds of a bowl compared to the end. It also really depends on the blend. I find English blends the most forgiving. Blends that have more sweetness like a vaper I find go downhill when relit cold. I dont smoke straight virginia blends so Im not sure. In the end it all depends on you. Id try it before I tossed the blend. Most are not going to be awfal.

I might have 1 to 4 pipes with varying amounts left in the chamber in my "go to" rack where they sit upright...
Happens all the time. I'll quickly learn whether it's all ash or not.
Gives me a chance to jog the memory and palate at the same time... What was I smoking the other day? Let's see, these are open... hmm, oh yeah! That's it.

Try it. Just smoke what's left in there and see if you like it. If not, throw it away. I've been either smoking out the leftovers, or if there's a good bit of leaf left in the dottle, dump it out into a bowl. I have a pile of dottle in that bowl to smoke. Hey! It's tobacco!

I'm with you.
Ive done it many times because I don't want to waste tobacco, or just because it's there....but ive never noticed an enhanced flavor as many do.
