For me, DGT works best with Virginias, as well as light Latakias and VAPers. A good pal who puffs only Virginias usually prechars his bowls and sets them down for days. His serious smokes are the those multi-day-old Virginias. He believes the charring caramelizes the sugars in the leaf.

If I'm smoking inside and the tobacco is fairly dry it's doable. A pipe I smoked outside is a one and done affair though, especially if it's an aro or latakia blend.

I'll still run a pipe cleaner through if I'm going to put it down for any extended period though. Coming back to a dank skunky pipe is the worst.

My question really is: After smoking some of your pipe and putting it down, after about how long will it taste bad to pick it back up and smoke it? I mean, can you leave it for several hours? How about overnight? What do YOU do?
A pipe is different from a cigar in that you can smoke half of it, return in a day or two and not have a bitter smoke. At least, this has been MY experience. It's all subjective.

The encouragement has been great. I’m smoking a pipe I started a day and a half ago, but had to abandon. It’s Chenet’s cake and I think it’s smoking better after sitting for 32 hours. The taste seems fine too, after the first few puffs. Thanks all!

It depends on the blends and how you smoke them.

I personally smoke very easy, barely lighting the blends to take a few small sips, and then let the pipe go out and cool down.

Blends/pipes I start on in the evening I don’t finish, and leave overnight, I have done this for the past 4 years, and many of them are the same, or better, better meaning, like some marinate over night.

Right now as I’m typing this, I started on a bowl of 2021 Tilbury in my Savinelli Trevi Rusticated (320) 6mm last night, only a quarter finished, and I’m smoking the rest at the moment, and it’s great.

I’m also using a White Elephant Meerschaum filter in it, and it still smokes great with the filter.
