Did I understand you right, when you write that these will have the plateau left on them?

Hi Cosmic. No, I was not referring to leaving the bark/plateau top on the pipes that I make. I normally cut this off in order to make sure that there are no imperfections or flaws running down from the top. Having said that, I do have a couple of collectors who would like the plateau top to be left on the pipe bowl and if the block has an even top and I am pretty sure that the top has no hidden flaws, I will be leaving one or two as 'rough tops'. I am still wondering whether to make a few pipes in the style of the 1970s Charatan freehands and this could be an option although my primary goal is to make classical orthodox English shapes with 'straight' grain.

Hi Ken,
Not that you're asking, but I'd say make what gives you the most pleasure. I'm planning to retire at the end of next year, and to the extent that I decide to continue on as a working artist, I'll be doing what interests me the most.

These are 3 of the first turned blocks - for various reasons, they are not from the original clutch of cut blocks posted here 8 weeks ago.

I have finished my first two pipes, not yet stained or stamped. :)

All I do is smoke pipes, but it is huge fun to see eight blocks lined up and partly shaped, and then carved out some more in process. It's a lovely sequence, seeing the finished pipes beginning to appear, emerging from the wood as it were. Truly pleasing.

As it was warm, dry and sunny yesterday, I used my circular saw (outside on my decking) to cut five more blocks of plateaux and to 'trim-off' these three bowls (the black marks are only burn marks from my saw blade).

These are now ready for shaping. I think my confidence is up for taking on the Cutty-shaped one this week. I do feel more confident and excited!
