That is incredible! Thank you for posting this. I have been enthralled with the story of the Endurance expedition for decades and I didn't know about this. I cannot believe how well preserved the wreck is! Just amazing.

Yes, thanks! Also enthralled- book and movie. IRRC- a gamble today- they left thinking the Endurance was being crushed by the ice. Doesn't look so bad sitting on the ocean floor.

I've been interested in polar exploration and explorers since my early years in the Coast Guard and have always been disappointed that I wasn't able to see Shackleton's Shack when I was in Antarctica.

Last year I watched a documentary about the effort to find the Endurance that was failed because of equipment failure. I'm glad to see they were successful this time and It's amazing to see the condition the ship is still in.

Ash! It's time to fill up your Peterson Shackleton pipe and have a celebratory smoke, as you listen to the audio book!

That is so perfect! And a beauty of a pipe.

Was wondering about what the crew might have been smoking. I come up with Capstan, based on not much more than the Titanic was loaded with it when it left Southampton. Time frame isn't exact, but if anyone else has a take on it, I'd love to know.

What the ice gets, the ice keeps. That's what Shackleton said when the Endurance got trapped over hundred years ago. On hearing they're unable to raise her, what he said still holds true today. Crying shame! All I can see when looking at the amazing images from the deep is cutter top tins of tobacco, tons of them neatly stowed below the decks!☹️

Unable? Maybe through lack of funds, lack of desire, or positive mood to let her rest on the bottom.
I don't think it's a matter of technology to raise her intact, just a monumental task!

And hoping for some more input on what tobacco(s) they would have been smoking...

Photos I've seen of the expedition showed the following tins;
Wills's Capstan, Golden Bar, Bulwark Plug.
Player's Navy Cut. Lambert & Butler Waverley Mixture. Franklyns Twist & Rhodesian Seal Navy Cut Plug.

I always wondered how they had so much tobacco on that trip. I mean they didn't anticipate being gone so long, but they had quite the stores built up haha
It’s because EVERYONE smoked a pipe or cigarettes. That tobacco had dual usage.

They smoked so much that after they ran out, because they left much of it behind, they boiled their dottle with dried grass to “imitate” tobacco so they could keep smoking.
