I just blacken them before I smoke them.
You must be more skilled than me at blackening the rim, as I tend to burn them - not in the good way - if I don't use the honey or syrup on the rim too; and for me, once a cob gets that burnt taste/odor, it's history. So by treating the rim, it becomes a no-worries situation for me. - Sherm Natman

Aesthetically, it looks old-tyme-cool. Blackening does nothing for the smoke. Nor does the honey-coating.

Seriously, if you’ll discard a cob pipe as soon as you experience a burnt taste, but you advocate “burning and charring it” before you smoke it.....that’s a special kind of...
I prefer to keep my cobs yellow and clean for as long as possible. Like genuine Meerschaum, for which they're named, they share it’s ability to provide a cool, dry smoke because of the material’s ability to absorb.
Coating with honey to block the pores and hasten a charring robs the pipe of delivering its best performance.
But... but... —I’m willing to give you maximum benefit of any doubt. Sooooo, mail me a nice honey coated Brigham Briar— pick out a really nice one, and I’ll let you save face by placing it in rotation and I’ll give a thumbs up to your honey treatment.

I don't enough to have an opinion, but smearing honey on anything but toast appears to me to be total nonsense.
