I've been working on this nearly every day for the last week. We are being bombarded by bots.

Traffic has gone from 80k a month to 800k - the increase seems to all be bots and they are overwhelming the server.

I've installed all kinds of things and changed server settings, but it only holds them off for so long.

I'm still trying.

Would the addition of a robots.txt file help (if not already employed)?

Any ideas who's behind the bots? Is it a targeted, malicious attack?

I figured that was the case. I just thought if it might be AI bots, the robots.txt file can be used in a similar way to the usual old usage that might reduce some unwanted traffic:
