Interesting thread. I think it's important to differentiate between mass-produced cigarettes and all other forms of tobacco. The chemicals in cigarettes are the kliller. So enjoy your Pioe and the life-saving pleasure it gives you -- in this modern world, the "time-out" factor of pipe smoking may alone add years to your life.
That said, anyone who eats chemical "food" designed in a corporate boardroom (most Americans and, increasingly, a majority of westerners) has no business talking about the risks of smoking.

The only true study I've ever seen is this one:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/74716036/Surgeon_Gen_Report.pdf
That copy is in my Drop-Box folder. It doesn't appear to be dated, but references the mid to late 60's. It is a bit favorable towards a pipe smoker. The frequency of pipe smoking in the study, is way beyond what I smoke per day.

You've heard it all already: Genetics--pick the right ancestry, don't clench, move the pipe around, and above all, enjoy it. There is also a risk from meats cooked over an open flame, walking across the street, etc. Pipe smoking is a pleasure I won't give up, and I've been smoking my pipe for 53 years. I brush and floss carefully several times daily, and my dentist tells me that my teeth are free of tobacco stains, and if I didn't tell him that I smoke a pipe, he says that one would never know.
