I've watched this post with some interest. My Grandfather smoked a pipe for as long as I knew him. He lived to be 92. His heart gave out before anything else. His son, my uncle, also smoked a pipe for as long as I have known him. He developed bladder cancer.
My Father smoked cigerattes all of his life until he developed Emphysema. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life and I have Non-Hodkins Lymphoma. Point is, not smoking is no guarantee you will not get cancer. As mentioned in previous replies there are plenty of things in this life that will kill you. One of my favorite things to do in this world is ride my motorcycle. I think I probably have a better chance of being run over by motorcycle blind automobile drivers than I do of getting cancer from the few times I get to enjoy my pipe.
Just relax, enjoy, and smoke in moderation.

I know we've about beat this to death but:

Johnny Carson several years ago had an old Japanese fella on the show...

He was 112 years old. Johnny asked him what he attributed his long life to, he said

"I quit smoking my pipe two years ago!"
(He quit because his fingers couldn't lite the matches anymore).

Its easy to understand, when you step back and look at it objectively. Drink plenty of water, eat organically grown foods, get plenty of excercise, and like many others who do the same you may get cancer like they did. Patrick Wayne Swayze died of pancreatic cancer, and he lived a healthy life style, as far as we define one.

George Burns, eat, drank, and smoked, He lived to be 100 years old.

The truth is we cant predict the future and it seems very random to me who lives and dies.
Many we see as deserving death live, and many we see as deserving life, die.

To follow up on what dunringIii and Mick posted earlier, the correlation between tobacco and cancer ultimately depends on the sample used to obtain that correlation. It the population used to produce the relationship between cancer and tobacco was restricted to people who a) consumed tobacco and got mouth or lung cancer, and b) never consumed tobacco and never got cancer, then the correlation between cancer is inevitable but of questionable validity. Alternatively If a more inclusive and randomized sample was used, then the correlation has more potential validity. However, knowing what I have emassed concerning the American Lung Assoc. I suspect they started with the answer they wanted and proceeded to collect data to substantiate it. Hence the former biased sampling is more likely. Therefore the role of tobacco as a causal factor for cancer remains, in my mind at least, as undetermined. This however does not negate the possibility of a relationship between tobacco consumption and cancer.

After devoting many hours to studying this topic I have decided to enjoy my hobbie without worrying for a single moment about what it will do to me. The increased risk does not seem all that much, and the enjoyment is great. I also do extreme sports which could kill me, or leave me paralized any time I do them and I make my own beer. Enjoy what life gives you, you only get one. If I ever have any horrible thing happen to me, I will simply accept it and figure out what I can still enjoy with what time I have left, no regrets. I have permanent injuries already from my sports which have not slowed me down at all.

Interesting subject no doubt. I think in the future it will be determined that genetics plays a big role in who gets it and who doesn't.

I've got longevity on both sides of my family. The women typically live until their 90s and the men live into their mid to late 80s. Their is a substantial risk of diabetes and blood clots in the men, so I have to watch my food and exercize. Smoking seems to have no effect whatsoever. One grandfather died at 89. He quit smoking cigarettes in his 70s. The other died at 85 and didn't smoke.

Honestly I'm not worried about. These days it seems like everything gives you cancer. Someone once told me I shouldn't smoke because it increases your chance of cancer and that one in three people get some type of cancer whether it's smoking related or not. Well with odds like I might as well smoke

If tacking on 10 more years of life, means I have to spend the other 80+ years of my life being miserable then I don't wanna live anyway. You can keep it!

I lost my grandpa, who I loved madly, to lip cancer due to pipe smoking. But looking back, he did not smoke smart. He would get sores on his mouth from the pipe because he clenched constantly in the same spot. Rather than resting it, he would put Campho-Phenique on it and fire up again.
After checking with my dentist and on the web, and based on my eperience, I came up with the following guidelines for my pipe smoking:
1. If you have any sores or abrasions on lip or mouth, refrain from smoking until they are healed.
2. Move your pipe around your mouth. Do not keep it always in the same spot. (Holding allows this better than clenching.}
3. Keep your teeth and gums in good condition. A healthy mouth can gives fewer openings to trouble.
If I am going to smoke, which I am, I am going to smoke smart. Hope that helps.

Its interesting that this topic came up. Medical doctors used the word cancer for the longest time to label aflictions they couldn't explain and still do in some cases. I find it odd that they being scientificly higher than most that they do this. Many times they discover that the labeling of things as cancer can scare many patients into drastic procedures such as radiation. I think many doctors are licsensed drug pushers and will always ask if there is alternatives to some of the medications they suggest. Have noticed the amount of legal claim commercials are on TV and in magazines against drug companies?

Good topic. I was just at the dentist yesturday and I always ask them to check for cancer. My Dentist told me now on a few occasions. "we'd rather you not smoke, however you have nothing to worry about. Smoking a pipe now and then or cigar won't cause you any issue. It's the guys we see that constantly have a pipe hanging day in and day out, 20-40 years, they develope sometimes some oral issues". Hearing this from a professional that deals with people's mouths everyday, made me feel more at ease about my occasional bowl of tobacco. And by occasional, I mean approx 4-5 a week and a few cigars a week. In fact, I'm going to fill my pipe with some SG FVF right now. Enjoy your pipe.

smokenscotch... I was told the same thing year ago and also to move your pipe around when you smoke it. In other words if you clinch don't always hold it in the right or left side of your mouth move it from one spot to another once in awhile. I can remember when I was a kid an uncle that had a flat spot on his lower lip from always holding his pipe day in and day out in the exact same spot.

To be honest, I personally won't care about this for 2 reasons.
1.) Life is already short and fragile, it is impossible for someone who care too much to enjoy life.

If it is the time, your heart will somehow stop beating; if it is not, you can survive even a car run over you...
2.) I believe if you are living in urban area, breathing can cause you cancer.... why bother to care.....

God will take me when he's ready and I'll be waiting. I only get to live one life and I'm gonna enjoy it with my pipes. Though I'd hate for cancer to plague me, I'd also hate to give up pipes. Guess I'll take my chances and play a dangerous game with fate.
