There won’t be any laws requiring you to buy an electric car anytime soon, once they are deemed reliable enough and they get the battery distance great enough, the government will simply start raising taxes on gasoline and diesel to “encourage” you to go electric. Self driving cars will be similar, once they have proven safe and reliable, insurance companies will offer discounts to purchase one, whilst raising rates on passenger driven cars and trucks. These insurance rate decreases and increases will keep going until it’s simply unaffordable to use a passenger driven vehicle as your primary mode of transportation. Passenger driven cars and trucks will largely be relegated to toy or limited mileage usage. Guns will go much the same route, the government isn’t going to ban guns outright, they might restrict ownership of military type firearms, but hunting arms will be safe. No, after some major mass shooting, the government will invoke an ammunition tax “for our safety” and they will incrementally increase these taxes, both federally and locally until ammunition costs so much to purchase that none but the wealthy could possibly afford the go to the range and fire off multiple 20 or 30 round magazines for fun. Many of those who have stockpiled away thousands of rounds will eventually sell it off as the prices keep rising and a single 20 round box of .223 starts going for $200.00, most will not be able to resist. The hardcore preppers who do resist the temptation to sell their ammo for a great profit will be few and far between. Sleep well gentlemen!

Oh, come on, now. I can't think of a single instance where our government has used punitive taxation to try and modify our behavior.

So, a box of .223 is like a tin of McClelland then?

Nailed it, Mr Beddoe. They can go even further: penalising drivers for having passengers with them on man-driven vehicles. Already some jurisdictions have made it illegal to smoke in your car if you have a minor as a passenger. All in the interest of people's well-being, of course.
Another example of a Dark Design
