Canadians and lovats are a preferred shape for me. I'm of the opinion that they do offer a cooler smoke, maybe all in my head, but mostly it's the shape of the pipe I like. I'm not a clencher, but the shape will not be a problem in that regard unless get a super big pipe. Harder to get the Canadian or lovat shape from briar I think... billiards are shorter in general...less briar, more common? And the straight pipes have the advantage of not needing to fiddle too much with a pipe cleaner!

Recently sold a kriswill saga canadian pipe. Quality pipe that smoked smooth and was made well. Not heavy at all, actually quite light. It all depends on how thick it is. Mine wasn't very thick walled and had a somewhat thinner oval shank. I wasn't a big fan of the bit though, so I sold it.

Shoot, you want picky??? All my pipes are either Billiards or Dublins. That's it. They have to be between 5 1/2" to 5 3/4" long, period. The bowl must be between 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" tall with an inner diameter of 0.73" to 0.78". Other than 2 glove compartment emergency pipes, all my pipes are from only 3 makers. See why this is so difficult for me??? This pipe would be different, and I dont do different! (Sigh)
Oops. Small correction, They are all straight Billiards, straight Dublins, or 1/8 bent Brandies.

You probably never let your peas touch your mashed potatoes, or you separated the peas from the carrots, before you ate them when you were a kid. Just saying.
You're not far off, lol. I am a very picky eater as well. No condiments (catsup, mustard, mayo, pickles, etc).

I don’t own any Canadian style pipe but do find them attractive.

Since I hold my pipe in hand, one day I look to own a Canadian.

I will agree with Unclerasta. Just yesterday, upon finishing a bowl, I wanted a “little more” and figured I’d add 1/4 bowl with the added benefit of building some carbon in the heal. The smoke was noticeably heated. So distance between the burning leaf and you has some affect.

Sorry, man, but I don't buy the "cooler smoke" thing. At all. At the rat smoke travels through the shank, it's not in there long enough to cool anything. I consider this Pipe Myth #1. I'm more concerned with how the pipe FEELS in the clench.
the rat? Is that how smoke gets from one end to the other? Very small rat. :) Just a funny image is all.

I find it is actually pretty easy to clench mine. Not as easy as say some of the others but... You just don't have as many places to clench it that work well but if you are persistent you'll find those spots that work for it. And where it's just as comfortable as any other pipe.

This is what I am talking about, never settle for anything less than the exact thing you want, and if anybody gives you a hard time, just explain Lovat lovers live, longer. I have researched this for years and it is true. If anyone wants to see the research I have a Pay Pal account already togo. The price is a cool 100,000.00. Am I a great guy or what.
