There are very few pipe shapes / styles I haven't owned and smoked, however, I have never owned (or smoked) Canadian or Lovat, you know, pipes with long shanks and short bits. They always look heavy and unbalanced to me. It's odd, I guess, because I love Billiards. There is a Canadian pipe that has really caught my eye (a first). I would like experienced opinions on this. Are Canadian and Lovat pipes as heavy and unbalanced as they look to me? Is a short bit uncomfortable, or do they feel similar to a Billiard in the clench?

I have a Savinelli 806 Cumberland lumberman. It’s exactly in between those two. I really like .

I've two. Love them. After smoking mine, billiards just look like nosewarmers.

I'm not a clencher, though.

Sorry, man, but I don't buy the "cooler smoke" thing. At all. At the rat smoke travels through the shank, it's not in there long enough to cool anything. I consider this Pipe Myth #1. I'm more concerned with how the pipe FEELS in the clench.

Im a clencher and like yourself have yet to own a canadian or any long shank style of pipe. They have recently caught my eye too. Strangely enough, when i imagine myself smoking one I don’t think about clenching it. Rather more like a short churchwarden that I would hold while pretentiously yarning in the evening

Some shapes push the right button, and others don't.

I have more straight Bulldogs and billiards than any other shape, but only 3 Rhodesians and no Canadians/lovats/lumberman - those shapes just don't appeal to me, despite being somewhat similar to the Bulldogs and billiards I love

I have 5 or 6 Canadians or Lovats and they are little different from a billiard or any other shape unless taken to an extreme. I do have a Brebbia Iceberg which is about 7 inches long with a large bowl and that is hard to clench though it is an excellent smoking pipe.

IMO, the overall length and weight as well as the comfort of the bit is far more relevant than the proportion of stem and shank.

More like a Bing, but effortless clenching.

I like Canadians/Lovats. They are pretty nice smokers, though not good clenchers for me. Aesthetically I find them pleasing to the eye.

The pipe is only 5 1/2" long, right where I like 'em, and the stem work cant be beat. Maybe I'll take a chance.

Here's a link to my $2 Savinelli Canadian. It's 7.5" in length and weighs 50g...too heavy to clench, but still a nice looking pipe. You might find this interesting.

Lovat is easily my favorite shape, and I’ve found all the various ones I’ve owned to be excellent clinchers. Sometimes Canadians or other ones without the saddle stem are a little more difficult, but YMMV.

I own two canadians and a lumberman...three of the best pipes I've owned. Clenching isn't an issue because the weight of the pipe is spread out over the entire shank, that's why the bowls of canadians tend to be slightly smaller in size. Mine weigh somewhere just under 2 ozs; I have a Savinelli spring billiard that weighs the same but doesn't clench as well as my canadians do because it's shorter and all the weight is in the bowl.

The Savinelli 812 is one of my favorite briars. Not too heavy and really easy to clench with the little bend in the stem.
