Exactly, I can promise that I am impressing/looking to impress just as few people in the summer when sparking up a stogie and drinking twisted tea's on ice in my sweaty gym shorts on my cluttered back porch as I am in the winter when I'm tucked inside my cluttered den with my wool blanket and old PJ's firing up some aromatic with my IPA's and brandy.. haha.People who have seasonal preferences aren't all looking up to see what is proper at what time. Far from hoity toity. We just prefer to smoke certain blends when it's hot and prefer others when it's cold.
Most of it is just what I'm naturally drawn to via trial and error. Sure, there's a bit of a generalization to it (most white wines tend to go with fish better because they are lighter and crisper therefore don't overpower the lighter flavored meat) but it's almost always because of those concrete principles behind the generalization.
Light beer is more hydrating/easier to drink when it's hot out and ales are more bracing/rich to drink when it's cold. It's like why stereotypes exist lol. Of course there's always exceptions to every rule... but it doesn't disprove the fact that there still is, generally speaking, a rule.
