On a trip to UK in the 80's, we took the fast train to Scotland for an overnight in Edinburgh, and you knew you were in a different country. At the Castle, when you visit the Scottish royal jewels, they tell you those jewels down in London are all pretenders.

Wow ... another childhood hero leaves us. One of the great starring men, who turned out to be an absolutely terrific character actor as he aged.

RIP-Sir Sean. I must admit a slight lump in the throat. I read all the Bond books as a kid. I love Bond films and just about envy movie and roll with Connery in it. He really was a larger than life type character and person.

I hope it’s not blasphemy or starting a war, but after Connery, I must say Daniel Craig’s bond is my favorite. I think he has a hardness to him that none of the others have.

Aye. Loved Scotland so much, he spent most of his life in Spain and the Bahamas.
He loved Scotland! Great Britain? Not so much. An independent Scotland was what he desired. I will try to be more specific should such an occasion arise again. Also, to the point: Why pay exorbitant British taxes when one doesn't have too?

Think it through guys!

Just out of interest what makes you believe Scottish taxes would be any less 'exorbitant' were they to vote for independence?
How 'independent' Scotland would actually be is up for debate anyway as the minute they leave the UK they'll then apply for membership of that bastion of accountability the EU?

“Why pay exorbitant British taxes when one doesn't have to?“

Oh, I don’t know, perhaps to pay for Scottish schools and hospitals, if you “love Scotland”?

Think it through guy!

Again, he wanted an "independent" Scotland. That shouldn't be so hard to understand. A Scotland under British rule was not something he enjoyed. Scots' schools are in reality, today, Brit schools. GB health care is not Scottish healthcare. Why pay taxes, when you have an alternative/ He has the ability to live elsewhere and hang onto his moneys. We have "players" who keep threatening to leave the US when things don't go as they desire and ... they never do. I guess they enjoy the self-flagellation of living in a country they are not happy in.

We are picking "nits." Why live where you don't feel comfortable if you have endless choices? He certainly earned the right to live where wished.

Tax rates in a "free" Scotland? Who knows. The American "founding fathers" decried taxation without representation. How are we doing under "taxation with representation?" Sometimes things just do not turn out as expected.rotf

Hey, the weather we’ve had in Scotland today, I’d rather be in the Bahamas too. I just wouldn’t be a hypocrite about it.

Do you see?

I don't. You choose to live in the UK. Connery chose not to. Nothing hypocritical about the situation. Connery was very vocal in his wanting a "free" Scotland. He campaigned hard for it not too long ago. Rather than, as he perceived it, live under British rule, he left. I don't see the conflict. He made a lot of American dollars, Euros, and Pounds and selected not to give a penny more than necessary to the "Crown." His choice. He was very upfront about his choices.

I've seen not seen otherwise so, I'm guessing he paid required taxes throughout his career to the proper governments whereever he lived or maintained residences.

You made you choice. Connery, rest his soul, made his. If you'd rather be in the Bahamas, figure a way to get there despite the "virus." Or, after "it" moves on. I do not understand why you would live somewhere you'd rather not be. If you'd rather reside in the Bahamas ... figure how to move there.
