Sad news. The earliest thing I've ever seen him in is Hell Drivers from 1957. It was a good film and also starred Patrick McGoohan, Herbert Lom, a very young David McCallum and the original Dr Who himself William Hartnell.

He started as a Mr. Universe winner. He was a Scottish independence proponent who received a knighthood from the Queen of England. I remember that first Bond film which paired the action-packed but decidedly droll script with Connery's exquisite comic timing and wry delivery of lines. In one of his interviews years ago (can't remember where) he said he gave up the Bond role because it was such a soulless character, which seem insightful from an actor who had played the role to perfection. Ninety years ain't bad, unless you are 89.

I'm sorry he died before his beloved country could achieve it's independence. Rest In Peace! I am sorry "James Bond" is his identity to so many, he was so great in so many genres other than Fleming comedies.
