He started as a Mr. Universe winner. He was a Scottish independence proponent who received a knighthood from the Queen of England. I remember that first Bond film which paired the action-packed but decidedly droll script with Connery's exquisite comic timing and wry delivery of lines. In one of his interviews years ago (can't remember where) he said he gave up the Bond role because it was such a soulless character, which seem insightful from an actor who had played the role to perfection. Ninety years ain't bad, unless you are 89.
