The problem isn't the scientists and the data. The problem is the timeline and the ridiculous ways politicians twist what should not be twisted. There is a huge need for rigorous studies before anyone says anything other than "there might be a trend". My daughter is on the frontline working on C-19 testing and on isolating components of the virus to aid vaccine production. But she says it takes time and that politicians twist everything for better or mostly worse. BTW, she is not rich, not getting rich and will never get rich as a scientist and for her trouble, she has bruised facial bones from wearing masks all day, she has cracked, bloody hands from sterile procedures, and her eyes are bothering her because if she is not working with a mass spec (IRMas, etc.), she is working with various forms of microscopy. She is plagued with headaches from the stress and worry of being contaminated every time she steps in the hospital/research center. And I forgot to add that during this pandemic, labs across the country have had to shut down because funding has been pulled in the last 4-6 weeks. WHO has answers we refuse to listen too.....so you make your own value judgment of what the hell is wrong with our response, etc.
Well, you've said it all. I can't agree with you more. Most people don't understand the troubles we face in our profession unless it affects someone close to them. Frankly most people in my own family don't understand. Most research scientists are grossly underpaid and work insane amounts of overtime without compensation they're paid salary, which is well below the national average. It's something you do because you love it, but it's not a luxurious or glamorous life by any means.

I have worked as a researcher, professor, consultant, and now as a program manager for a conservation organization. Our income seems to be inversely related to our education and experience. It is frustrating.

Emily is

Thanks, Steve and Brobs. Apologies for the proud daddie post. She is pretty damn cool. My son that is a senior was just given an all-expenses-paid scholarship to BU to study biology and medicine. My youngest son also wants to follow science into medicine. We have been blessed in that they all want to give back and actually, unlike me, like people. I ask my daughter for a photo 3-4 times a day to show her siblings. They send her photos back. Here she is today getting ready to pull her hair under a cover to go to a meeting at work. She is a 5'4" dynamo and I am obviously the proud dad pulling out his wallet of photos. I apologize for the lack of piping discussion in this post. I will say she wants one of my pipes and a hunting knife put into the will for her. View attachment 30465

You have every right to be a proud dad. I have a daughter, she is not even 2, every little thing she makes or every new word she says make me proud, I can't even imagine how proud you are.

Just wait. It gets better and better. Especially when they can talk and discuss things with you. We have 7. A few adopted. We will have 2 left at home once my senior moves on to college. They are all a blessing and frustrating and fun. You will see.

I've got a 3 year old boy at home. "Shelter in place" has been both an unexpectedly wonderful bonding experience and an utter handful. I know deep down we're going to miss it once we return to our routines.

Just got an email from my boss. We're all getting called back in to start coronavirus-related work. If it isn't coronavirus-related then you have to stay home for the time being.

Is the screen name "aquadoc" a clue to your area of expertise? Marine biology? Fisheries? Watershed management?

Yes. AquaDoc was the nickname given me by my fellow grad students because I worked in freshwater, estuaries, and near-shore systems. My doctoral work focused on large river, estuarine, and salt marsh food webs. You?

I mostly do freshwater work now but do help the marine folks too.

Molecular biology. Mostly you do what's paying the bills and not what you want to do. So it was cancer, then Alzheimer's, now it's aging research, and at this very moment aging/immunology in relation to the novel coronavirus. My head's still spinning. I never imagined I'd have to do anything like this.

Respect for and gratitude to your Daughter. May God watch over her and keep her safe.

Well, I, for one, would love to have a beer with you, Doc. We have something else in common, too. I did a study and a paper in college about species diversity of aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates in three Illinois streams. And by BU do you mean Boston?

Once this disaster clears away and if you are ever in the NH area, lets hit the streams. As for BU, yes, Boston University.
