I’ve enjoyed a rich, full and satisfying life so far, and not a little bit of my pleasure is smoking as many really nice pipes every day full of any kind of tobacco my heart desires.

I have dozens of different blends to smoke in maybe a couple of hundred nice pipes.

And tonight when I ordered a box of 1792 and some tins of British made tobacco from Smoking Pipes I discovered my tin of Grousemoor is a Lakeland type tobacco.

I’ve read of Lakeland tobaccos on this forum but I know I’ve never in my life before tried anything that is supposed to be a Lakeland.

They don’t sell that around Humansville Missouri.:)

As I understand a Lakeland, it’s supposed to be a sort of British Mixture 79 or other fruity tasting delight,,,,if you like that sort of tobacco.

So my first question, is why they are called Lakeland?

Was there an English manufacturer named that, or was it made by a lake?

I learn something new here, every day.

This is an old thread but packed with Lakeland info! I bought aged Grousemoor originally just to get the tin, lol, but I really like it at certain times. Thank you.

For $55 I just ordered a sampler of Lakeland tobaccos from Smoking Pipes.

Pipe smoking is the cheapest way to sin in Missouri, after coffee, and I think the do gooders and holy roller evangelists must also drink coffee.

They never tax coffee, never claim the fumes hurt the children, and if Jesus came to your house, you’d surely offer Him a hot cup of of coffee, you know?

One of my first really good smokes was Ennerdale. Loaded it into a big bowl basket pipe Canadian I had at the time. I think you'll enjoy it. It's definitely unforgettable.

So to be a Lakeland, is is made there or does it just have to taste like a Lakeland?
Afficionados call tobaccos made by Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth & Co., especially their scented tobacco, Lakelands because both firms were located in Kendal in the Lake District.

Today, GH owns SG and both are made in the same facility which is in Kendal still. GH is the only manufacturer of tobacco left in the UK unless you consider the Balliwick of Jersey part of the UK. J.F. Germain is in Jersey.

I’m not a big Lakeland fan. The Rose Gerainium oil is a bit much for me, and I find that it often obscures the tobacco. But I find that I really enjoy the occasional whiff of it in a ghosted pipe, or when it bleeds over into a GH/SG blend that isn’t supposed to have it, just from having been on the same cutter, packaging line etc. as Lakelands blends. Years ago I bought a pound of Coniston Cut Plug that has just an elusive hint of Lakeland scent. I really like it.

One of the pleasures of pipe smoking is you can buy a tin of the most exotic blends on this earth for less than the $20 chicken only bucket I’m about to buy at a drive thru.

A tin of Ennerdale has 16 3 gram pipefuls, for $12.

Imagine the finest hand rolled Rothschild from the Vuelta Abajo hand rolled on the loins of beautiful Spanish maidens in Havana for 75 cents each.

Maybe in Winston Churchill’s youth, not since.:)

Another thing worth noting here is that there isn't just ONE flavoring used in Lakeland tobacco. Unless specified as "unscented" or the description says no "Lakeland essence" is added, they will all have some type of sauce on it. There is a rum/fruit type topping used on a few like Grousemoor, there is a floral/incense type used on a few like Bosun, and there is a cinnamon/nutmeg spice type that pops up, too (I taste cinnamon in Kendal Flake). People like to lump them all together with the ever popular "granny's panties" moniker, but they are all different. I happen to love them all and usually smoke Conniston cut plug, Grousemoor, or Ennerdale at least weekly.

A little of the Lakeland “essence” goes a long way with me, but I’ve found that I can thoroughly enjoy G&H’s “Ennerdale,” which may be among the milder of the scented flakes—both in terms of scent as well as nicotine, which I prefer on the mild-to-mild/medium side. I can also recommend SG’s “Kendal Cream.” Neither blend will hit you over the head with their ”Lakelandness,” but they’ll each give anyone who’s interested a good introduction to this unique style.

I love the Lake District, the sheep, the hiking trails, and summer rain, the daffodils, and the leisurely way of the people. I like the non-aromatic blends, the rope cuts, and other aspects of the tobacco.

The Rose Geranium flavoring and other aromatics from there I avoid. They are the only blends that would impel me to designate a pipe or pipes to avoid ghosting, and I don't like that flavoring enough to devote a pipe to it. I want flavoring that brings up the flavors in the tobacco itself, not that upstage or dampen those tobacco flavors, which for me, Rose Geranium does. That's my preference. Others love those flavorings and wouldn't have them any other way, and gladly designate pipes for the purpose. They are just not my thing.

But if you ever get a chance to go to the Lake District, do so. It is a lovely place to be.
