Also you can get afraid to branch out. I never would have bought a volcano with bamboo shank but just traded for one and I love it now. Even before I smoked it I thought to myself “man, this thing is pretty homely”. Yet I love the way it feels and smokes. Plus it has a flat bottom to sit upright. I would have passed on this pipe but it’s opened my eyes to some other styles and materials I may have overlooked.If you purchase enough of the same style pipe from the same maker, you'll eventually be disappointed I think. There are lots of variables with both the material and the carver that are difficult to impossible to reproduce perfectly time after time. I like steak but I sure don't eat it every meal and I'm sure if I did, I'd get sick of it after awhile. I have a variety of shapes. I am really, really enjoying my relatively new experience with Meerschaum pipes. I'd hate the thought of having been so narrow minded I would have missed out on the joy of smoking Meerschaum pipes. However, there are so many different personality and behavioral types, each person should do what makes them happy.
