Some of my premoulded stems whistle in high pitch. Since I drill my own stems there is no whistle at all.

The Austrian Pipemaker David Wagner once said he always could say if a pipe will smoke alright, that would be the case when none or a hollow deep sound was heard by drawing air. A pipe that whistles to him had some problems in the airway which could lead to moisture in the pipe.

If you are uncomfortable enlarging the airway you can send you pipes to a refurbisher and have them do it for you.

The German word for pipe “pfeife” translates as “whistle” (fife)
