I'm becoming strangely obsessed with this blend. In fact, I've dedicated a Savinelli Champagne 606 KS to it. The restrained sweetness of the Va and smokiness of the dark-fired make for an interesting ensemble. The perique is so light it's hard to detect until I'm well into the bowl. I confess I was hoping for more perique, but I've managed to submit to the blend as is. And while the flavor is not one I would usually seek out, there is some mystique here; it has an indefinable quality that draws me in. I can't imagine what this is like with some years on it.

Still struggling to finish my first tin, over 2 years later. I was pulled in by the reviews, but only after purchasing a couple tins did I find the chatter about the blend change (being a substitution of DFK in place of much of the Perique). Oh well. I'll eventually finish it because it's not bad, but just doesn't fit a "niche." I pull it out when I don't know what I want to smoke, but want a punchy flavor and am a few drinks into the evening.

I'm stoked to open my tin ... some day. It better taste real good with 3-5 years on it because it may be that long before it sees the light of day.

I have hovered over this blend (although not available in Europe, sadly) many times, however I’ve always backed off. Seems to me there are two ways DFK is “done”: smoky and woody like in ODF, Lakeland Dark, Dark Birdseye OR paired with molases/liquorice which makes it taste very sweet and almost cloying for me. Peter Heinrich’s dark strong flake falls into the second category. HU Director’s Cut is more balanced, but still not there.
If i were to dream up a “perfect” blend for my tastes it would be 3/5 StJames Flake, 1/5 DLNRs, 1/5 ODF.

One of my very favourite blends. Was originally drawn to it by the comparisons to the old Three Nuns. Find, it reminds me of Escudo, but with some more figgy flavour to it. I did have one bad bowl of it, but usually pretty consistent. I usually smoke it it a Savinelli zulu - folded and stuffed.

The very first release in 2014 did remind me of the old VaPer Three Nuns, which was what they were trying to achieve. But by 2018, they reduced the perique content and upped the dark fired to save money, so out went their attempt to have the old Three Nuns.

I enjoy it so much, that I dedicated this pipe to it:

It’s the only blend in my rotation that has a dedicated pipe.
@gamzultovah - mind me asking who made that pipe? Beautiful pipe!

And to stay on topic I smoke Doblone doro in a meet with coffee - really brings out the flavors of the tobacco. Not sure if it is pre 2018 or after, will need the check. Still a great smoke but will ghost the pipe.

I never had the original, but had heard much about it. Either way, I find it's a nice tobacco.

I don’t mind. It’s a Fritz & Paolo Becker Rusticated Horn (or Olephant).

Update: as this post approaches 3 years old, I still have 1 (one) unopened tin of Doblone. And now that I have to pay Wisconsin excise tax (about ~35% surcharge!), I’ll probably never buy another. Will have to make this tin count!
I started with 20, I think I still have 18 left. Now retired with mounting medical bills I'll likely never buy any more tobacco or pipes.
