This Savinelli has been taunting me at the local antique store for a while now so finally broke down and bought it! I my $35 which I feel is a steal. I've reamed it and now giving it a salt/alcohol soak. In a bit nervous about cleaning the stem and am looking for some help. I've cleaned many a stem, but this one has some red running through it (as you can see in the picture). Where it is green is supposed to be black. In worried that the red will be removed if I soak it in Oxiclean and/or use some fine sand paper and then buffing wheel. Any tips on what I should do?

The Bing cumberland oxidizes bad. Use Magic Eraser and Soft Scrub to get the oxidation off. It doesn't remove any material. Buff to shine. Not sure, but Oxyclean might make it worse.

Thanks. I've used Oxyclean before. Soak it for an hour or so. It doesn't clean it, brings a lot of the oxidation to the surface and make a it a bit easier to scrub off with a magic eraser. That's how I normally clean stems. I just didn't wanna lose the red.

Shouldn't lose the red. Cumberland rod stock is black and red vulcanite twisted together to create a faux woodgrain appearance. My favorite kind of stem.

That pipe is a easy blend of a churchwarden and regular stem, with a lot of flair to the design. It's one of Sav's all-time favorites.

The length is what really got my attention. Aparenrly Bing Crosby love Savinelli and had them make him one a big longer so the bowl wouldn't block his face in camera.

I basically fell in love with that pipe the moment I first saw one, but never committed because it's still shorter than a Churchwarden and usually more expensive.
I've been looking at enough medium size pipes that the bug is starting to come back though. If it weren't for those extra long Ropp Canadians I probably would have bit the bullet already.

Those Bing's Favorite burners are just elegant as hell and I think you stole that beauty at 35 bucks. (While I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Crosby as a performer and as a businessman - he really sucked at being a human being.)
Please send pix when you've completed the scrub and shine process. I've got a hunch it's going to be something pretty special.

Just recently got my Bing. It sits right next to Clark's Favorite. You will enjoy yours. I hope Savinelli comes out with more pipes in this series. (And pays a bit more attention to what those guys actually smoked =)

The Savinelli Bing's favorite is modeled after The Merchant Service Pipe of London England, Bing had several people make this shape for him, but he is the one who designed the Pipe originally to his specifications. He would buy them by the dozen from Merchant Service as he was always giving them to fans or sometimes they would get lifted by admiring fans as well. The regular ones were not that expensive back in the day, around $15.00 dollars or so. The merchant service special had the Silver band and some of Bing's personalized ones had a Gold Band, and I have seen some with the initials B.C. engraved on them.
Cheers,--Eric

Great info, PipeDreamer. I only wish Savinelli had offered one with a straight stem. Here are some from an earlier thread:

I actually prefer bent stems like my Savinelli has. It would just be nice to have a choice so I'd have an excuse to buy another one.
