Al, no matter what, I'm sure if I saw those pipes in person, my eyes would be popping out of my head. Tell me, have you ever had any of their house tobaccos?

Pete, thanks for the info on Horey J. I'll remember to take some pix of this pipe on my next visit, this was an amazing piece. Unstained and unsmoked. It had a pretty elaborate stem, and John said that was at home. I don't know why, but I guess he didn't want to risk breaking it.
John is moving the shop from their tiny mall store, where it has been for over 35 years. He found a much larger spot, still in the Fair Oaks VA area. He will have a big smoking lounge and room to display his impressive collection of pipes. Right now, what he does have at the store is stashed in a back room.
Dave: They do have quite a line of house blends, several of my buddies love them, but I've not yet tried one! (between two stores..). I'm pretty narrow in my blend preferences (more like a railroad track narrow), but I'll try some English blends on the next pipe club meeting night.

That set is a thing of beauty. I want it. Next commission payment is in October and I have a feeling I'll be asking John if it's still available! Now how to talk her out of new furniture and Christmas presents... :?

There's pipe collecting and incredibly wonderful pipe collecting; yours, sir, is certainly the latter. What a score!

4noggins, that set isn't mine, but it belongs to a shop owner I visit in VA (John Hayes). He always seems to have some gem hidden in his back room and I think he looks to thrill me. He definitely did on that visit. He was mulling over selling it, with some reluctance. After a many year absence, I heard he is coming to Richmond and I suspect he'll have that set to show/sell.
Coincidentally, a member of the SmokersForums, who lives in the West, was also gifted a 7-Day set of Sasieni 8-Dot pipes. What are the chances that two of these exist? That owner is restoring them and will have them at the Vegas show for display.

The set just showed up on Ebay this evening, sold by Treasure Pipes, who apparently also did some restoration work on them (or perhaps John, who does excellent work). This should be a fun ride!

Damnit Al, now you've done it... Now the bidding will be crazy.
I need five other guys to join with Peck and me as we bid as a block and then divvy up the pipes afterwards.
Who wants to join us in becoming the Yoko Ono of this 7 day set?

I'll certainly be curious to see what the set fetches. On the one hand, it's a set of 8 Dots and large ones at that. Most of the 8 Dot production were smaller sized pipes. The set of pipes has certainly been cleaned up, definitely looking better than it did when I viewed it in Vegas. On the other hand, this grouping was not originally conceived as a seven day set of Sasieni 8 Dot pipes, but appears to have been cased at a later date, based on the Sasieni Logo on the case.
This item definitely has the makings of a "crazy" magnet, so the bidding should be entertaining. Sane bidding (like there's any of that left in this segment of the market) would be in the neighborhood of $4500-$5000. Actually, I'd like to think that sane bidding would be less, but I've been confounded by the rise in prices as wealthy Asian buyers have become much more active in the pursuit of fine vintage British pipes. Crazy bidding could double the above stated amount.

I have to go by the shape numbers, 70, 41, 78, 13, 11, 25, 44, the pipes are grp. 3/4 in size. The only shape I don't have an example of (and certainly not Eight Dots!!!) is 78, the Melton.

This is an interesting observation. We know the logo on the pipes was different during the period, but food for thought, here is the cover and title page of the mid 1930's catalog at Chris Keene.

I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the case closed, front and back...certainly if one was to be a serious bidder, I think one would.

@ ssjones - Interesting! Lots of Sasieni 7 day sets running around! I should have looked at the photographs that I took of that Vegas set. I stand corrected. These do look a lot nicer than that set and the case it MUCH better. I'd forgotten how bad the case was on that set.
@ dmcmtk - Very interesting! So they were using the later script logo on their literature. Why should I be surprised? Barling did the same thing. The question is, did they use it on their cases. Maybe so, since Barling used their script logo on their cases at least as far back as the 1920's. But we also know that Sasieni used the fishtail logo on their boxes.
Any guesses as to what the set will bring at auction?

That treasurepipes listing is already nearly halfway to $3000. I would think $5000+ is well within the realm of possibility.

Great point.
That font style also appeared on that old 1931 baccy mag I used to have...
