Salt or Sugar?

This is the underside of the paper that was covering the tobacco in a 4 year old tin of RO Acadian Vaper. Salt? Sugar? Mold?

It looks like a paper that has texture to me. It brings back memories of when some folks liked textured or pop corn ceilings.

Probably not.

I've never seen anything like that, what causes that? Is it just moisture from the tobacco, the tobacco itself, or the way it was packaged? That's a little scary to see after only 4 years.

Yeah, that's mold. Sadly, I'd toss the tin here.

That's a good observation. The mold seems to be only on the paper and the rim of the tin. Even the tobacco stuck on the paper seems to be mold free, that is a very peculiar detail.

The paper is not bubbled. The substance wipes right off and had a chalk like consistency.

I'm guessing against mold. That stuff looks more crystalline, and looks like its coming from the actual tin itself. I'm no expert though, and agree with mortonbriar- it sure is odd that the tobacco looks fine...........

I'd look at it under a loupe, or try to dissolve some in some water, or taste it............ I know, I'm a bit weird that way...............

Some species of bacteria can form crystalline-like structures, and yeasts can have a white chalky like growth habit. Maybe it's just a product of the funky perique fermentation bugs.

It looks like someone was wanting to keep your tobacco insulated.....with asbestos.

I would check the top layer of tobacco closely with a magnifying glass and if its good, then transfer it to a jar and smoke it!

That looks like white mold (and actually a fungus).
