I have seen a lot of pics of their new islands, any shallow spots (pretty much the whole South China Sea is shallow) that are close to strategically important areas they dumped a few ships of dirt on and built aircraft carrier sized military outposts with landing strips.

and then claim it's always been there. So then they can claim the water there has always been theirs. If a person was a full of sheet as any government nobody would want anything to do with them.

The American public demands cheap goods. The American government waffles between providing cheap employees and prohibiting the entry of cheap labor. Ergo, American companies have to go where the cheap labor is. So, we do more business than we probably safely should but, safety doesn't enter into the equation.

Congress has to keep the shareholders (you and me with our retirement plans) happy. So, we do business with China. They provide the virus and ... the masks. We've worked ourselves into a corner. Can't blame the Chinese for our playing into their hands. We encourage them indeed, finance them in their endeavors. Quoting Pogo, yet again, "We have met the enemy and, he is us."

Yes, regardless of one's position on the political spectrum or opinions on covid policies and mandates, we all can agree on two facts: SARS-CoV-2 spread to the world from China, and China is making billions selling PPE to the world as a result. Not saying that there's a full tinfoil hat global conspiracy or anything like that, just saying, it's awfully damned convenient for them.

Politicians tend to ignore the rule: Actions have consequences. They like instant gratification and forcingt the later generations pay the price. Nothing new here, human nature is all.

Not just around their territory, they've expanded to Chilean, Peruvian, and Ecuadorian waters now as well.
