Many blends start as plugs that flakes are cut from. Leaving them as flakes cuts the cost of tumbling them into ribbons.
Never mind that blenders probably take into account that flakes are often rubbed out, and I seriously doubt any blender necessarily intends for flakes to be folded and stuffed... that's not why they make flake cuts at all, nor is that ever touted as one of the benefits of flake over ribbon.
Or if we apply this reasoning, probably need to get this for smoking plugs, you know, since the blender intended it to be a plug.
That said, I always rub out my flakes.
With all this rumination, I'm starting to think we're all sheep.
Sometimes I'm just lazy and roll them into a ball before packing them. These days though, I just smoke ribbon or cube cut blends. Little thinking or effort to pack and smoke them. For me, smoking is just a mindless activity I do while working or engaging in personal interests.
I used to think of @Ahi Ka while I rubbed out my “flake”… That is until I learned he was “a Dude” and not in fact a Maria Carey impersonator.

fold and stuff with various levels of prefluffing. I pull the flakes apart either into a ready rub or just creating some gaps in the flake.
Where are the mods when you need them? That title just says it all! This is a respectable joint! Mod, please change "members" to "Hustler Centerfold".

I thought I hear, or read somewhere, that flakes were also created, as a way of keeping the tobacco preserved longer? hmm

Flake, I rub it in my palm, done it for over 50 years, don't even think about it, it is just natural to me.
