"Rather inauspiciously, Joseph Stalin, leader of the second world, smoked Dunhill's Royal Yacht. Guess being a brutal dictator doesn't bar one from having good taste." Apparently he also never cleaned his pipes as another article states "He was reported to have the foulest smelling cloud of mundungus around him when he lit his pipe, because he never bothered to clean them."
"I have my first cigarette or pipe, depending on how I feel; sometimes I crumble a Herzegovina flor cigarette into a pipe, sometimes I smoke it straight. The first smoke of the day is important for setting your mood. If a pipe draws hard or leaves bitter juices in the bowl, if a cigarette is harsh and sears your windpipe, it can get you started wrong. To some this might see egotistical absorption in my own minutiae, which it would be if those minutiae did not affect so many other people. After a good smoke, if I am brought a list of Enemies of the People scheduled for execution and I spot a familiar name, I might easily write, in my own hand, that the person in question is to be sent to the camps, whereas if a bad pipe has soured my mood, I'll sign the list without even looking."

from "The Autobiography of Stalin" by Richard Lourie
Here are his pipes on display at the Stalin museum, they don't look like their in rough shape at all.

The stalin never cleaning his pipes is a controversial thing, there really is no evidence of it, it's more usually people in the pipe world wanting to vilify him because he was a pipe smoker. Even in the Briar files you quote as your source it states "allegedly". My personal opinion is he crumbled his cigarettes into his pipe alot so it would make for an unpleasent smelling smoke, also Royal Yacht isn't some crowd friendly room pleasing blend either. Personally I love it, it's a very kick you in the ass smoke that's good for a final pipe. I have to order a few tins as I've finally gotten around to trying the brigham match for it and really enjoy it. Definitely not an everyday smoke but when you've had a rough day and want a good nicotine bomb it fits the bill. Edgeworth was also Stalins favorite tobacco, not Royal Yacht.

@Andrew you are right it was Edgeworth and not Royal Yacht. The mistake originated in the film 'Stalin: The Red Monarch' were that American female journalist gave Stalin a box containing five tins of Royal Yacht.

I received my first tin of Royal Yacht this week. I was a little intimidated by P&C's opinion of it's 'full flavor' rating. Have done just one bowl so far, and I was pleasantly surprised. It didn't knock me down at all, and no nic hit that I expected. I did think the 'full flavor' rating was deserved, but have to admit this was my first 'strong' tobacco. I love BBBB and Plum Pudding the most out of everything tried.

Stalin ugh. Not a good pipe association. Many starved under his "programs," and many died at his orders:

"No man, no problem," was a quote. But actually many or most of the people he had killed were not betraying

him, but he merely had them killed to instill terror and tighten control. That is, they were totally innocent.

Worse than Hitler? Impossible to say, but right in that category. I don't care what tobacco he smoked, what

brand of shoes he wore, etc. Of course, some members of his family and staff thought he was quite a sweet

person. Right. Safest opinion to hold.

"The seller right for trying to unload that Yak Pee on the pipe smoking public," so spake the 'Stud.
I'm not sure that I've heard anything this good in some time.
How about this, as a bumper sticker: Original Sin/Get Over It!

In the words of Newman, "VILE WEED!" :)
I do not care for the stuff but it has a nice following.

Well, if anyone has a tin of Royal Yacht knocking around, that they would like to be rid of, I have a crapload of 1-Q to trade for it. I think 1-Q tastes like warmed-over weasel piss, but I'm quite fond of the Yacht. :puffy:

To date it is the only blend I've had that I smoke two bowels of it and promptly sealed it a jar and forgot about it. Just this year I pulled it out put it in the tin and gave it quite happily to a good friend and never thought twice about it.. Good by and good riddance

Love the stuff! Not an everyday smoke but perfect for a little something different. I alternate RY and Erinmore for those times when I need break from the regular English blends and Va's.

I thought that no other tobacco had a taste after Condor had melted one's taste-buds off and decimated the mucus lining of the nose.

Just smoked my first two bowls of RY and I can say that I am overly exited although I really like VA. The last quarter of the bowl gave me a slight nic hit which I dislike. Well, might be my first and last tin of RY.... :|

This tobacco was revulsion at first taste for me. Not too loaded with Nicotine but simple a vile flavor and aroma profile.

I spent 30 years avoiding RY after a friend - an older piper - told me that I would hate it. Then about 2 months ago I gave RY a try and loved it! Couldn't get enough of it, although I find RY has a fair nic kick (for me, at least). Currently having a break, but it calls to me...
