I had not heard about this on the news, fills me with great sadness for the great loss of life.

Being a veteran myself having served in the Falklands in 1982. The Cod war (as it was called) 1976

And the Gulf sea conflict 1987. I feel for all those lost souls. My sister ship in the Falklands was destroyed by an Exocet missle.

oldmansmoking, that's a solemn thought, your sister ship being destroyed by a missile. My minesweeper was on a patrol track off the Cua Viet River near the DMZ in Vietnam, and I always felt like it was a duck in a shooting gallery for missiles. We were lit up with a combat flare by our own fighter jets who apparently suspected we were a VC junk hauling weapons -- our Damage Control man thought it was a stack fire. When we went into port at Cameron Bay, we anchored near a similar sized ship, a landing craft, nose down in the harbor, mined by a swimmer-sapper. We had to drop concussion grenades over the rail for several days until we went to sea again. We did get to liberty ports at Taiwan and Hong Kong, but it wasn't a pleasure cruise.
