Resto of a C.P.F. Chesterfield

I thought I’d do a little write up of a light resto I did on a turn of the century C.P.F./KB&B Chesterfield oval shank billiard I did. I got this pipe for a song on eBay. C.P.F. Are somewhat uncommon and this one was made sometime between 1898 and 1920ish.

Reaming: I started out with a tri-blade scraper to get the bulk out.

Next I moved to a shaped oak dowel rod with 80g emery cloth.

I finished up with a couple of quick passes of my Cooks compass reamer.
Back to bare briar.

Rim & Shank

First I applied some carbon off to the rim to get rid of the lava.
After a few minutes it just wipes off.

I scraped the rest with a hotel key card used as a card scraper.

Then I reamed the draught hole with my airway reamer.

Then started scraping out the mortise with a flat sharpened pipe nail end.
Then moved on to a small sharp sheep’s foot blade, and finally a bore brush.

Stem: first I reamed the stem with a 02 pin reamer to clean and funnel it. This removed a lot of the crud in the stem.

Then I funneled back the burnt up tenon tip with a sharp 60 degree countersink by hand.

Then I put an alcohol soaked pipe cleaner in it to soak for a few minutes.


This removed most of the gunk.

Sanding de-greening.
I used 320g, 600g, & 800g followed by a soak in mineral oil. All sanding was done wet with a backing board, no rounded corners or sanded off nomenclature.

The nickel plating on these CPF bands if VERY thin, so it was just polished up with a jewelry cloth.

Then the whole pipe was buffed, polished, and waxed.

I got it to restore antique waffle irons and just tried it on a pipe one day. Been using it ever since. It’s basically just jellied ammonia.

No, it’s got none of the same chemicals as oven cleaner and does not require heat.

No, it’s got none of the same chemicals as oven cleaner and does not require heat.

While this looks like an unstained pipe to me, will the carbon remover not compromise stain ?
