Relights are part of it. I get that. But… am I the only one who gets a brief taste of ash when relighting after smoking for a bit? I remember, years ago, some guy watching me lightly scrap the ash off to relight, and he grabbed my hand saying, “ no, no, no, you’re messing up the pack!” OK. And? I’m don’t care if I’m messing with it. I don’t want a burnt taste in my mouth.

Just me? Or does anyone else clean out a little before relighting?

Depends. If I smoked for awhile, let say more than half a bowl, I might dump the ashes, tamp then relight. But lately, I've been lazy and just tamp and relight. I think the other guy was saying not to mess with the tobacco below. He would have a sore wrist if he reached for my pipe without permission.

Pack lighter and apply the tamper when smoke volume decreases. You'll reduce the need of relights or eliminate them altogether. If I put a pipe down for extended periods and have no choice but to relight, I've not noticed an ashy taste.

He grabbed my hand, not the pipe. He wasn’t being aggressive at all. Just an older gent doing what he thought was helping out an ignorant young buck. That’s not the case. I just do like the burnt taste of relighting ash. Kinda like I’m not gonna run my finger through an ashtray and lick it. It’s nasty. 😁

This is also my experience.

I get a ash taste after relighting cigars, but not pipes. Not regularly anyway, most of the time I get ash is when the baccy is all done and I'm still puffing.

you should have said to that annoying person something like "look if you ever get a girlfriend I won't step into your bedroom and point out all the stuff you're going to do wrong, such as saying oh yeah after she yawns for the tenth time". Or smack them in the face with the pipe and then apologize for the automatic action of assuming they were trying to kidnap you. Seriously though that person sounds super annoying. I've worked with idiots like that. You know they know little but demand you listen to them.

If I packed any lighter, it would never stay lit. And I’ve never found a tamp to help keep it lit. Again, maybe it’s just me. ??
It's you. But it doesn't have to be. Sometimes it takes years to find your stride. It's easy to forget how long it took for me because I've done this for long.

Cutting just behind the ash on a cigar and forcefully blowing through it prior to a relight really helps get rid of the ashy flavor for me.

Only if I scraped away to much ash and then could only see black tobacco on the top.

So, if you scrape away ash, make sure you don’t scrape away to much, so that you are only left with black looking tobacco.

I guess the best way I can describe it.

1. You’ll first see White Ash
2. Next you’ll see Gray Ash
3. And last you will see Black Tobacco

Only scrape down to the Gray Ash! ;)

Well, opinion from a newbie, so take it for what it is worth... about halfway through a bowl I find it harder to keep it lit without specific thought and effort to my cadence. If I have to relight more than once, I find it is easier to dump the ash, tamp, and relight. I don't generally scrape; I just dump the ash that comes off the top. The once or twice I tried to scrape, I ended up losing good tobacco. I have found it is easier to get through a full bowl if I ash once.

And yeah, I would not be pleased with anyone grabbing my hand, old guy or not. I am open to opinions, verbally, but once you reach for me my mood's gonna get dark, quick. But then again, I live in Los Angeles where things can get ugly quick.
