Idea of relight evolved with my pipe smoking. Now days, I really don't think about it. If it needs it, even if it didn't go out, I'll relight. Only thing that didn't change is, relight is very quick. Barely go near the top of tobacco and they are good to go.
I'm with you on all of that, except the last part. When you say you "barely go near the top", can you clarify? Thanks.

I use Zippo. I do pull the flame down when there is a need. But mid-bowl relight is very quick because the tobacco is already charred and they take ember really quick. If you look down the chamber, you'll notice that most of the middle of the top layer is covered in ashes. Most tobacco to the edge of the chamber is charred. Relight puts ember on those charred tobacco. Just by quickly and gently pulling down the flame near them, they will catch the ember.
