hello folks,How you would think if so called pipe-lighters are much better compared to regular ones, at least those first mentioned might be a better and safer 'bet in order not to burn a pipe rim acidentally-although matches are the best ones by me ..

There is a new lighter on the market that can produce regular, 45 and 90 degree flame, but it is disposable.

Sells for about $2

I have an IM Corona Old Boy, but find myself using Bics and matches more. I also have an antique Nimrod that I've used a few times, but it's usually just a decoration.

As long as you are careful, anything that can produce a flame is good. Just don't burn the hell out of your rim, or scorch your tobacco. scorched tobacco does not taste very good, I would know.

Two kinds of butane lighters...soft flame and torch flame. Zippos use lighter fluid and are all soft flame.
Two kinds of rim darkening...sooting and scorching. Soft-flame lighters and matches will soot the rims, that is, the darkening is a deposit of carbonized fuel on the rim. Torch-flame lighters will literally scorch the rim, meaning burn the briar and turn it to charcoal.
You can safely use a torch flame lighter, but you have to bring the point of the flame straight down from above the pipe, directly at the center, and draw a couple quick times and withdraw the lighter. In fact, if you want absolutely no rim darkening, using a torch lighter in that manner is ironically the best way.
Personally Idgaf about sooting the rim, I just want the pipe lit quickly and with minimal effort. I always smoke outside, therefore a Zippo is the only one that fits the criterion. If I smoked indoors, or where I could easily shield the flame, I would use a disposible soft-flame butane lighter...minimal hassle. Matches are fine too, but unless you're a slob you need somewhere to put the spent ones.

Been smoking a pipe for nearly fifty years and not once in that time has a soft flame butane pipe lighter damaged even the thinnest of bowls. Maybe I've been lucky, or just overly careful, but either way it hasn't been an issue.

Do you know where this lighter can be purchased?
Quote function still doesn't work.

Well, it does. The quote and /quote have to envelop what you're quoting.
And the adjustable direction flame throwers can lead to poor results. Hold the flame further away and draw it down to prevent rim sooting or charring.

I have most of the usual pipe lighters discussed on here including the Old Boy. I've had a Xikar Scribe since they came out and it's my go to lighter. Of course I have Bics stashed everywhere and have no problem using them.

Marty Pulvers sells the disposable lighter. It's called a Linse. You can probably find them elsewhere but Marty is just a kick ass human being.

I mostly smoke cobs, so I'm not hugely concerned with darkening the rim. Matches, and a bic suit me just fine.
Dollar Tree sells a lighter called the Croc that is a like a bic with a metal tube added, makes a great pipe lighter, but you can buy 3-4 off brand Bics for the same price as one of those.
