Yep.

Yeah me too, with one exception. Their Golden Mixture is a very fine ribbon cut, almost a shag. It's bright virginias at their best, citrusy and tangy. It burns very fast, which is nice sometimes. A perfect morning smoke, IMO.I was holding my tongue as well. I really haven't been thrilled by any of the F&T tobaccos. It has that acidic tingle without the flavor, for me.
Sweet, Spicy and full of flavor.I could've alternatively titled this thread "Tangy Or Not Tangy, That Is The Question."
Tangy is the quality I really like about reds and is what I'm after. I'm also only after current production. There is no need to suggest McClelland when it is no longer available.
I've tried: Sutliff 515 & Sutliff Cringle Flake
I have but not tried: C&D Carolina Red Flake (small amount) & Crumble Kake Red Virginia
Will order (when in stock): Watch City Simply Red
I've noticed Sutliff 515 starts up wonderfully tangy but about a third of the way into the bowl it dies down and I'm left with a very mild but pleasant straight Virginia flavor.
The Cringle Flake starts tangy and stays tangy.
Of the 2 Sutliff's I've tried this is the one I would order more of if I could. Can I expect any of the others to be somewhat similar to the Cringle Flake? Are there any other good reds in production I should be looking for?

Rhythm & Blues is already on my list to order when it comes back into stock. As well as Old Dominion & Rougaroux. After testing five or six blends I've concluded that straight reds are pretty boring. Of the tangy/vinegar type McClelland is the best (obviously) but Watch City Simply Red is reasonably close and better than anything else I've found (albeit I haven't tested Solani's or McConnell's red offerings). But if you're going to order Watch City, I'd recommend Rhythm & Blues which mixes Simply Red with some dark stoved virginia. Overall it's a more flavorful smoke.
Both are really enjoyable smokes. The Red VA Cavendish is good fresh, but just a few months in the cellar, and it becomes even more spectacular. Opening Night has always satisfied me.C&D Red Virginia Cavendish and Opening Night are on their way.
C&D Speakeasy ...
Don't know if they will just be using their standard reds with the CRF crop running out or what?
Maybe I'll e-mail them if nobody chimes in here. Would also be curious if they've had any luck finding a good replacement crop for the CRF.I have been wondering about this myself - can anyone from C&D chime in?
I recently opened a tin of C&D Speakeasy and am enjoying it. 80% of the blend is the same Red VA thats in CRF. Speakeasy adds some KY and Oriental leaf and a bit of rum, I think.
Cringle Flake is Excellent!!! Once you open the tin that "BAM" of Tang...Love It.I could've alternatively titled this thread "Tangy Or Not Tangy, That Is The Question."

I have to beg to differ. I find the vinegar that they top this stuff with to be nothing like a McClelland and it leaves a cat piss smell in my sinuses for days afterwards. But, everyone is different.Sutliff 515 RC 1 is about as good a minimally processed Red Virginia as there is on today’s market.
I don’t think there is any vinegar at all. I certainly don’t smell or taste any. There is a minimal amount of PG, which disappeared for me by simply spreading out the contents of a poun bag overnight. Pretty solid mixer, IMO, like 5100, but monotonous.I have to beg to differ. I think that just about any other red Virginia beats this one hands down.
I picked up a pound when it first came out. The vinegar my bag had was so strong that after the box sat on my kitchen table for a few hours, you could still smell it for a few days afterwards.I don’t think there is any vinegar at all.
I got a pound when it first came out, too, and my experience was nothing like yours.I picked up a pound when it first came out. The vinegar my bag had was so strong that after the box sat on my kitchen table for a few hours, you could still smell it for a few days afterwards.
