I was holding my tongue as well. I really haven't been thrilled by any of the F&T tobaccos. It has that acidic tingle without the flavor, for me.
Yeah me too, with one exception. Their Golden Mixture is a very fine ribbon cut, almost a shag. It's bright virginias at their best, citrusy and tangy. It burns very fast, which is nice sometimes. A perfect morning smoke, IMO.

I keep looking at this jar of Sutliff Red Virginia I'm aging and wondering if it will improve with time. I'll let you know how that works out, by and by. I have several tins of McClellands blends that feature Virginia, so likewise with those. My PS LNF and Bullseye coins have had a long quiet gestation. There should be some good Virginia smoking in here somewhere.

I could've alternatively titled this thread "Tangy Or Not Tangy, That Is The Question."

Tangy is the quality I really like about reds and is what I'm after. I'm also only after current production. There is no need to suggest McClelland when it is no longer available.

I've tried: Sutliff 515 & Sutliff Cringle Flake
I have but not tried: C&D Carolina Red Flake (small amount) & Crumble Kake Red Virginia
Will order (when in stock): Watch City Simply Red

I've noticed Sutliff 515 starts up wonderfully tangy but about a third of the way into the bowl it dies down and I'm left with a very mild but pleasant straight Virginia flavor.

The Cringle Flake starts tangy and stays tangy.

Of the 2 Sutliff's I've tried this is the one I would order more of if I could. Can I expect any of the others to be somewhat similar to the Cringle Flake? Are there any other good reds in production I should be looking for?
Sweet, Spicy and full of flavor.

Thanks all. I'll be giving all of the suggestions a try although some will have to wait until they're available again. C&D Red Virginia Cavendish and Opening Night are on their way.

I checked my cellar and I have a couple tins of the McConnell's Red VA so I might open one this weekend.

After testing five or six blends I've concluded that straight reds are pretty boring. Of the tangy/vinegar type McClelland is the best (obviously) but Watch City Simply Red is reasonably close and better than anything else I've found (albeit I haven't tested Solani's or McConnell's red offerings). But if you're going to order Watch City, I'd recommend Rhythm & Blues which mixes Simply Red with some dark stoved virginia. Overall it's a more flavorful smoke.
Rhythm & Blues is already on my list to order when it comes back into stock. As well as Old Dominion & Rougaroux.

Both are really enjoyable smokes. The Red VA Cavendish is good fresh, but just a few months in the cellar, and it becomes even more spectacular. Opening Night has always satisfied me.

I have another suggestion, but it is even harder to find. The Briary got in these tins of D&R Red Virginia that are sold under the Blender's Bench line of theirs. Fresh, it's not very remarkable, but letting it age a year past the date that is stamped makes all the difference. But, I can't find it online at all, but you could call The Briary. They are very affordable.

Also, GLP's Laurel Heights is a very nice red, which has just a smidgen of latakia. It's just enough to add a leathery chewiness to the favor. I had to be told by Greg himself that it had any latakia at all, because it is definitely not very prevalent. I actually got lost in the woods with my dogs while smoking this. I was so focused on the taste that i sat down to think about it. 15 minutes later, I looked up, and had no idea what direction I had come from. If I hadn't of had my phone, I probably would have panic'd. But, I ended up just enjoying not knowing where I was, ha ha.

Sutliff 515 RC 1 is about as good a minimally processed Red Virginia as there is on today’s market. I can’t think of anything more monotonous, though. Mixed 50/50 with 507 S, it is a good smoke. I have smoked at least 75% of the blends mentioned here, and all I taste is various sauce recipes, most of which add sugar in some form and make the tobacco smoke hotter. YMMV, IMO

I have to beg to differ. I find the vinegar that they top this stuff with to be nothing like a McClelland and it leaves a cat piss smell in my sinuses for days afterwards. But, everyone is different.
I think that just about any other red Virginia beats this one hands down.

I don’t think there is any vinegar at all. I certainly don’t smell or taste any. There is a minimal amount of PG, which disappeared for me by simply spreading out the contents of a poun bag overnight. Pretty solid mixer, IMO, like 5100, but monotonous.
