Most people get into Pipes expecting flavor. I suggest starting

out with a mild English, and there are plenty of them out there.

Most people start out with Aromatics and I did as well, but the

first time I smoked a tin of Dunhill Elizabethan, I never went

back...

Dunhill's Elizabethan is an English? I've only smoked the bulk, so I didn't have the chance to view its contents, but I thought it was a aromatic, personally. Cool. I guess I like mild Englishs...

Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture is a Virginia/Perique Lordnoble.

I infrequently slip back to using the old nomenclature, where

an English blend was considered to have no additives and come

from England. Sorry for the mix-up.

Ah! That explains it a little more. I do like VaPer blends but the latakia-heavy English blends usually don't do it for me. Thanks, fred.

Petersons Sunset Breeze , real tobacco , real flavor and no goo . Sweet enough to tempt and complex in the back ground . Not to start a war , but Iam feeling sparky . There is more Sh.. in a pouch of PA than there is in a stockyard .

I've found that when most pipe smokers talk about an "English" blend they just mean a blend with some Latakia... You might want to spend some time at a local pipe shop and do some "sampling".

searock,

Your suggestion is a great one. If you can find a local tobacconists with a knowledgeable staff, they can steer you to blends that may not be in this thread.
This said, I have no such tobacconist in my area. All of them are focussed mostly on cigars, so none of the employees are any REAL help when asking about blends. I just look for stuff that member suggest here, or looks/smells interesting. It's really sad when I know more than the staff about the blends they carry at the closest shop, since I know next to nothing. The others don't mind me browsing, but aren't too talkative since I'm ONLY interested in pipes and not cigars. Oh well...

I would definitely recommend you do Scratch....

It's great for that smoke when you just want to smoke and not worry about being fancy.

Tastes great, packs easily, burns evenly, cool, and dry.

And, (related to your other post) it is a good blend for building a excellent (ghost-less) cake... and won't junk up your pipe.

I miss read the above posts, lol.
I'll be making a mental note of the ghost-lessness of 1Q and picking it up for my pipes.

Definitely a cool subject. And one that could throw some advice to those more experienced as well I guess.
As I'm from the UK, what I'd suggest will be very very different from my colonial brothers. However, I am very interested in their suggestions because I would dearly love to try some of the US tobacco's but have difficulty making my mind up over which one. I do prefer a mild tobacco, but my main tobacco isn't classed as a mild 'Condor - Ready Rubbed'.
As a begginer I would lean towards a Mild to start off with, and once you get the taste then progress. I do not see the point in going 'hardcore' to start and then giving it up because it was a bad experience that wrecked your mouth and tongue. It is far better to start off with something you can get on with or better still leaves you 'wanting'.
I would stick my neck out and say that the tobacco you first choose is as important, if not more so, than the first pipe you buy. Which is why I think this thread is such a good one.
