(Re)Start Pipes. From the Beginning for a Pipe

Dear confreres,
I smoked a pipe for about 2 months for over 8 eight years. I had a Peterson that I decided to buy when I started this hobby (always on aromatics) but as it is an activity that requires some rest, calm and dedication it was not compatible with my life then.

I have been smoking cigarettes for about 20 years and the experience with the pipe was a way to see if I could reduce the consumption of another 20 cigarettes/day. It was not successful...

However, living conditions changed and I wanted to restart this hobby. I wanted to start by purchasing a quality pipe (maximum 100 euros) and as stores in Portugal are rare and very expensive compared to online shopping, I did some research and selected some pipes that are within my price range.

I would like to have your opinion on these boys for a beginner in this hobby. Considering the hundreds of camchimbos I've seen, these are the ones that, for their price, seemed preferable to me (on sight).

The second issue concerns the purchase of tobacco. Given the restrictions on the sale of tobacco over the internet (some countries do not allow online sales) and since I do not want to risk buying outside the EU so that the order does not get stuck in customs, which online stores in the EU recommend me.

I’ll start off by saying that a well-designed pipe is a well-designed pipe. As long as you are sticking with quality brands, which you are, you should be able to get a good smoke. Thing to remember about the pipe is it’s essentially just a fireplace for tobacco. Once you’ve chosen a pipe that should smoke well, reasons for purchase move into areas such as the aesthetics and comfort, such as “do I like the way this mouthpiece is shaped?”

As for tobacco,I would try a number of different styles, not just aromatic’s. You may find some that are more similar to your cigarettes that are more pleasing than an aromatic. Cigarettes tend to have Virginia’s, Orientals and some Burley. But they don’t tend to have flavoring, which can smoke hot. I’m not trying to get you to not smoke aromatics, just open up the playing field for the tobacco’s.

Estervals is an excellent EU shop for tobaccos.

Yes from buying new and used pipes, a bad smoking pipe is more rare than a good smoking one, just buy on athletics, what looks good and it will smoke fine…

Brands like Peterson, Stanwell, Chacom, BBB sound fine. Pay attention to filters, what the pipe is set up to take (or not) and be sure you are getting what you want. Most filter pipes can be smoked without a filter, and/or with a non-filter adaptor -- just know what you are doing on this score. It's an annoyance that this is not better spelled out. I'd start with just a few and work up to a seven day rotation. You may buy more, many more, but start slow until you know what you like and why.

Moretti (on eBay) is also worth a look. Some of his stem work is a bit chunky for my taste, but he makes a fine smoking pipe.

If you can get them down there in Portugal, Hardcastle make very good pipes at the price you're considering.
Their quality control is very rigorous: way more than Peterson.
The briar they use is good quality: way better than Peterson, matching price for price.
The drilling and the fit is always spot on, you will not get a bad one and it will smoke perfectly.
As long as you like the styles there is nothing to fault really.

Are you looking at buying a new pipe or an estate ? Estates are worth considering but most will need cleaning, even if the vendor says they are in a "ready to smoke condition".

The Danish Pipe Shop provide excellent service and have an extensive selection of well-priced estate pipes, including BBBs, Stanwells. I would also look at their Georg Jensen offerings.

I have a number of Peterson pipes. Most of their bent pipes will not pass a cleaner, which is something a lot dislike. Also their systems pipes divide opinions. Neither stop me from buying Petes.

Blakemar Pipes sell directly, and most of their pipes are within your price range. I think you will be very happy with their quality.

Smoked 2 months back 8 years ago, or smoked 8 years worth of tobacco in 2 months? Peterson is a good choice, but make sure to check the pipe if you can. If it's online, try to shop from where they post the actual pipe. Not sure about others since I only smoke Peterson briar pipes. But any reputable company pipes would be good.

The pipe chooses you! You will know when the right one jumps out. One member might swear you should get a Savinelli 320, but you could be like me and find them hideously ugly. You'll know what you like. There is no "best." Just have fun!

French pipes often over-deliver in quality vs price.

There is a EBay seller, Bruno Nuttens (Pipes Estates) offering both used and NOS (new, unsmoked estates) at very low prices. He is a pipe-maker and his estate pipes come in great condition.

I don't know about French pipes, but I do know their beer sucks. Don't know about Aussie pipes, but I'll take Aussie beer over what French calls beer any day. Foster bitter in oil can is fair dinkum.

In Lyon (the French food capital) some years ago wandering in the old part of the city - stopped for a coffee and was surprised at the great cup. Went in to compliment the barista, only to be greeted by a broad Aussie accent. Turned out he was from Melbourne ?

We've got pretty decent coffee culture here in Oz. Not many places where you can get better.

I Live in Lisbon capital... there are one real good store (Havaneza) but even there they sell more cubanos than pipes or pipe tobacco. And the prices... are about 50% more than internet.

Yupe. Figo. Actually, it's flower. But somehow it turns outside in with nectar and everything, acts like a fruit. Used to know a Portuguese friend who used grow figs in Portugal.
