when you say not worth anything, do you mean less than £50 each? He seems to think some are more, but it's ok either way, he doesn't want to get rid, he just has these thought processes, and we want to be sure with him.
Probably. Although something is worth what someone will pay.

Yes, this is known as the nomenclature and the Country of Manufacture stamp (COM). Below is a good example, from the Republic era. This one also has a silver-hallmarked band, with the hallmark stamp for 1980. Without the hallmark stamp, you can only date to an era, but that is important for determining value (older is better).
