Today - 12th Apr - is Cosmonautics Day (also known as International Day of Human Space Flight) and the commemorates the first manned space flight by Yuri Gagarin. So here is quote from Yuri:

When he came back to earth he actually had to leave the capsule and descend by parachute...

A farmer and her granddaughter, who had seen the round capsule fall heavily to Earth, were greeted by the site of a strange, silver-suited figure. "I told them, don't be afraid, I am a Soviet like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!"

Unfortunately although he recorded this later in his diary he didn't record their reactions (absolute terror would seem reasonable to me).
