Bang on, Looks like it's chagovatoloco's turn to root about in the cellar in search of a new contrivance.

By the way Soldiers (darn Redcoats at that) used it to slip behind the brass buttons on their best dress tunic so that the cloth didn’t get dirty when they polished the button. I think the swanky one was however made in the states.

I don't know about the top one, Plateauguy, but the bottom one is an ice chipper that was common when people had ice boxes instead of refrigerators.
There's something very similar to it sold today, for breaking up chocolate.
Okay, just read the wording on the top one. It's used for sealing jars?

The top one is a turn of the century jar opener, and John got the second one - bet some of the guys never heard of an icebox instead of a refrigerator.
The beams in our kitchen are covered with antique kitchen utensils - almost like a torture chamber.
