Thankfully, this thread is going much smoother. Civil behavior can produce answers to many questions, and ultimately, lower stress for all of us. Getting angry and mad does nothing but demonstrate that the two year old never really grew up. I appreciate @leonardw coming on here and taking the time to update all of us and possibly provide us with information about our favorite blends.

I am confused that 507C is marketed as 100% virginia, while LNF is marketed as a VaPer. Wonder what the thinking is with that?

That was what I was wondering as well! If 507C and Luxury Navy Flake are the same blend, does that mean that 507C isn't a pure Virginia and there is a little Perique in it, or does it mean that Luxury Navy Flake isn't a VaPer and is actually a pure Virginia? Either way I'd sure love to know!

Good question. But I've never assumed that labeling (or any marketing blurbs) for any tobacco product was entirely accurate.

Yeah, add me to the list of folks who are wondering the same thing @geoffreybeene brought up. Felt like I was in a Twilight Zone episode when I read that, and until I get an answer, I will continue to feel that way. Which is virtually indistinguishable from any other part of any other day in my life these days, but that's a monologue unto itself... 🙃

Thank You for all the information Leonardw. Hopefully this will help put some minds at ease for the time being. It's very good to know that as of right now no decision is completely final on what is going away and there is a strong discussion to continue as much as feasible in the future and even to offer support to the B&M's where needed.

Or perhaps a suspiciously large industry, that's just going to have many duplicate, triplicate, or more blends cleaned up.
There are a LOT of duplicates out there.
I'm not surprised to find new ones, but I am entertained by how many people imagine there to be differences between them, just because they were told so.

Fascinating about the 2 blends being the same that has been brought up a few times and I’ve considered it briefly but there’s a leather note I just don’t find in LNF that I do in 507c but they both seem to contain the same amount of topping albeit different, this I find especially when DGT I notice almost a Hawaiian Punch sweetness on 507c and LNF doesn’t quite as much intensify with its honeyed sweet tea-ness.

Have you replicated this over multiple tins/bulk buys? What you may be experiencing there is batch inconsistencies.

I'm always reminded of this thread concerning Sillems/mcconnell - Sillem's Commodore / John Ayelesbury's Commander / Robert McConnell's Latakia Flake - Identical? :: Pipe Tobacco Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/sillems-commodore-john-ayelesburys-commander-robert-mcconnells-latakia-flake-identical.85589/

I’m also dumbfounded by people who can’t/don’t/won’t distinguish between brands and the companies that own the brands and produce the products. You know, the people who go catatonic when you tell them Peterson’s doesn’t manufacture tobacco and Dunhill hasn’t manufactured tobacco for decades.

One other factor that hasn’t been mentioned is processing.

Going back to the “why didn’t McClelland sell their recipes” idiocy is the reality that much of their results depended on their processing, something that Mike McNeil didn’t share with anyone because it was his judgement not just running the tobacco through a pipeline on autopilot.

It’s why Germain’s keeps repairing their ancient equipment rather than scrapping it for modern replacements.

It’s why batches vary as much as changes in sourcing.

Change the equipment, change the results. Change the people guiding the equipment, change the results.

It will take some tinkering to get a similar result from a different pipeline.

It's a shrinking industry folks.
More to come.
Is it actually though? He said Sutliff has been increasingly profitable each year since MB acquired them in 2013.

I would also like to hear the answer to how 507C and LNF can be the same blend while one is listed as a straight VA and the other a Va/Per.
As well as whether the Sutliff employees are being given severance. No claim about caring about the pipe tobacco world holds up if they are not.

Profitability and volume are not related. One company’s financial health doesn’t reflect overall consumption of tobacco. What we do know is that domestic production of pipe tobacco has had a precipitous decline over the past decade or so.

Never made those claims. However it is often harder to be profitable in a shrinking industry than a growing one. Especially an 11-year streak of continually increasing profits.

I can’t imagine all of the employees themselves “caring about the pipe tobacco world” I mean as far as a paycheck goes for some lot; and well the rest surely aren’t left with much to care about now.
I am not asking what each or any of the Sutliff employees cares about.
