Same, the interference with eating and drinking drives me nuts. I like eating cheeseburgers too much to tolerate it. I have a longish beard though.

I have a full beard with a mustache but I don't us any treatment for the mustache so it grows whichever way it wants.
Until the beginning of June inhad a big bushy walrus mustache. For me and that simple style, just brushing the dripping sopping wet mustache while blow drying did 80% of the work getting the hairs to lay how I want them. After that, brushing some lanolin into the completely dry stache gives a little bit of hold and a beautiful sheen.
When I did try the handlebar mustache, Got to be Glued hair gel did an admirable job keeping the shape.

I keep the mustache simple these days, but when I had a handlebar I used Grave Before Shave Fisticuffs Cigar blend wax.

I get kinda lazy when it comes to my beard and 'stache. There will be times where I let it go for a few months and it all develops a decent length. The entire time, it's just shampoo with the occasional beard oil to finish. I do have wax, but rarely ever use it. Whatever it is, it was something that I've had for years that came in a beard grooming pack that I picked up for the oil.
I have Korean men's curse. Cultivating couple of hairs on top of my upper lip. There are Asians with wonderful facial hairs. I ain't one of 'em.
Not far off my set up. Though I don't have any straights. Or the jug.
There was a time when I had my beard, with a light brown dye. I used to moisturize it with lubricant oil from engines, sewing machines I think. It was horrible, it was a kit for big beards, which I bought on Amazon. What a rip off. Real butter for small displacement engines. That's an early 1900s German lusterware shaving scuttle. I've got three more identical ones and several others of different shapes. The black handled straight is a 200+ year old G. Johnson with original buffalo horn scales. My double edges are mostly Merkur and Gillette along with this Parker.
Weird mine just goes straight down. I assume you "train it " out like that?
Where it's been trained into a handlebar for so long it has a slight sideways growth now.
Are you sure that's not your nose hair that you've trained to grow that way? (Just kidding) I have a scar on my upper lip where I had a grinder kick back on me, cutting over head on a ladder, and hit my lip against my eye tooth (canine) and completely split it in two. I've trained my mustache to do a combover to hide the scar where the hair doesn't grow.
Damn, I bet that hurt! Probably invented new combinations of swears during that!
I go for the half handlebar, just below my lip. No wax, just a good brushin after the shower and shave each morning. The Dickey Betts mustache. Easy, no fuss. Though right now it's a beard because I haven't shaved in a week. The coolest cats have mustaches.
