90's production 25g plugs. Having dried out a bit explains the 2-3g weight loss. Lovely to see!?

If the bar weighs 21g that's over 1/2oz. What is the stated weight on the packet? I have had these things through my hands before but they went on a one way trip to Woodsroad as they were used for sampling purposes.

Thanks for the reply condorlover1, that's the thing, there is no stated weight on the packaging, ?I just remember that as kids we always got him a half ounce from the tobacconist, he preferred the half oz's because he was always losing it, ?guess he figured he'd rather lose a half than a full one! But the weights suggest they are ozs, I will add another pic or 2 for scale etc and let you deduce it.

Yep, 90s sounds about right from memory. I found out today from my mother, that the last thing he asked for, before dying in his own bed, family around, was a "wee puff on the pipe" before passing on. Literally the last thing he did.
And boy he loved that warhorse.

Yep that would be a 1/2 oz bar and is probably the same size as the Condor Plugs that are still manufactured.

I gave a 80/90s W.H. Bar to @hoosierpipeguy last year at one of our Florida Pipe Club meetings and that seemed to be about the same size or maybe a tad bigger than a Condor Plug. I really don't recall but the original being about the same size would make sense since why would they have different sized steam presses for different plugs. I think I only ever saw it for sale once in the UK circa 1985 whilst I was motorcycling through on my way home from a visit to Scotland. I think they were selling it in the newsagents in Towcester when I stayed in the Saracens Head which was an ancient coaching inn I stopped off for the night before finishing the final leg down the A5 to Essex the next morning.

Thought I’d post this here. Side by side comparison of current bar (left) and the original standard “rerelease” (right)



Both of these tins were opened and decanted into Mylar bag 3 weeks ago.

Things that stand out.

The moisture content of the current is way goopier than the older one. Took roughly 3 hours dry time to get to the same case. The last pic shows how the tobacco sticks when squeezed

I sliced these with a knife to try and be consistent, the older one shaved off and rubbed out to fish flakes. The current clumped off.

The newer is darker and smells like the topping. When I originally smelled the older one I got the rich topping, then after smelling the newer one I sniffed the older plug again and could only smell the base tobacco.

The way the bars have been pressed and cut seems to be different to each other, this explains why the older one holds together and the new explodes out of the tin.

I never smoked the old one fresh so I can’t do a proper comparison, but I’ll say the flavours are much richer and it feels much more like a stout and tobacco forward smoke, whereas the current just tastes like it smells.
