It is absolutely removable.I have a very general question: I just received a Missouri Meerschaum diplomat and tried to remove the stem. It turns but does not come off. Are these stems non-removable ?

How? I didn’t want to break it. I was turning and pulling but nothing. It is absolutely removable.
I got it. Thanks. I also found that stupid paper filter inside.Sometimes they are a tight fit, and you want to have a good grip on the shank while twisting the stem so the former doesn't crack. Ask me how I know...
Those are just placeholders for filters.paper filter
Damn ! I smoked twice with it in.Those are just placeholders for filters.
Some use folded up pipe cleaners for filters so I suppose that tube will absorb a bit of moisture.Damn ! I smoked twice with it in.
Dont feel bad... I did too.Damn ! I smoked twice with it in.
I was today years old when I learned this. Those are just placeholders for filters.

Same! Did it a few times when I started until I realized the stem could be removed. It was nasty at that point so I threw it out and never bothered to get a new filter.Dont feel bad... I did too.
Balsa is extremely absorbent. If a triangular piece of wood is a filter, then a paper tube is, too.
Paper is, too. My point was that we're not needing the smoke to pass through the medium to be considered a filter, it just needs to catch some of what's flowing by it.Balsa is extremely absorbent.
Once upon a time they came with a Medico filter at some point they just started using a hollow paper tube. Probably similar to a Savinelli adapter but replacements aren't available. You just use filters from that point or not.Paper is, too. I keep Savinelli 9mm balsa filters around and I cut to size. I can get two filters for 6mm opening from one 9mm filter. Then I have a couple of pipes that just take a 9mm whole.Once upon a time they came with a Medico filter at some point they just started using a hollow paper tube. I figured it out.It should remove. While turning the stem, pull backward. Hold the pipe from the shank, not the bowl. Removing the stem while holding the bowl, may cause the shank to become loose at the bowl attachment over time.
You may have a pipe that has a tighter than normal fit. Hope that helps.
Will it fit a filter?MM makes some pipes that come with acrylic stems to begin with, but they cost a little more. I figured out that it was cheaper to buy a MM with acrylic stem and use the stem on whichever cob I may be smoking at the time. The aftermarket acrylic stems cost just a bit more than the Emerald pipe which has an acrylic stem to begin with.
Here is a picture of my Mark Twain model with the acrylic stem from an Emerald (also MM).

Many won’t, but the Bracken pipe is a filter pipe from MM that uses a filter and has an acrylic stem. There are probably more. Will it fit a filter?
