Or... The Importance Of Tobacco Blend Names. And Do They Really Matter? The question comes to my mind in part because of the renaming of The Country Squire's Middle Earth blends. They're great blends, but much of what brought them to my attention was specifically because they were inspired by places mentioned in The Lord Of The Rings or blends smoked by characters from those novels. Now, granted, I've already fallen in love with those blends and will continue to purchase them, but Old Tobey will always be Old Tobey to me and will go in a jar labeled as such. And other blend names have changed over the years as well that I might not have tried, if not for what I thought was an interesting name. So what do you all think? Would you have tried Black Frigate if it were named Purple Elephant Fluffbunny? Would you have tried Old Joe Krantz if it were named My Crusty Aunt Nan? Or how about Merde De Cheval... oh wait... that one doesn't count... If you know, you know.

I found it kind of off putting when a blend had a number for a name and thus ignored a lot of McClelland tobaccos for years because of that stupid reason. Thank goodness I tried them out before they went away, and stocked up.

I, too, was attracted to The Country Squire's line due to the name but stayed for their blending acumen. That said, I probably would have tried them eventually simply as they offer a sampler pack. I will still maintain the original names in the cellar as a minor civil disobedience. While I adore Tolkien's work, and his son's amazing efforts on his behalf, the estate (and their legion of C&D letters) can pound sand now that they are gone.

Numbers for names still drive me nuts. Luckily I stocked up on some actual named McClelland blends. And I still call Balkan Blue "Blue Mountain" haha.

Indeed. I may have tried them eventually as well if mentioned in a review or on the forums. But yet, may not have.

Ever the cynic, I always thought the more fetching the name , the lesser the blend.
Granted, the Country Squire took it to a new level with their blatant theft of intellectual property.
“I’m not sure how much H47 we can sell, but if we call it Suave Hobbit Sauce it’ll go like hotcakes!”

I don't know. If I were to create a fantastic blend, I would want it to have a great title to help pique interest. Something like Dark Mountain Cabin sounds so much better than Virginia Black Cavendish Mixture No. 1.
