My first year of being a pipe smoker was the equivalent of believing in santa...all those interesting names on the glass jars, and they all smell AMAZING, like candy and chocolate and peaches and cream!

Nowadays I look back on those early explorations of relabelled bulk lane aromatics and I wonder if the tooth fairy is still going to pay up when he/she/they take into account all that sugar.

I know Jon David probably didn't fight for the right to keep the names because of how much that would have cost but I wish he could have. Most of the names he used were in the LOTR books and movies, but they also existed well before Tolkein wrote the books.

Mirkwood, for example, was used by Sir Walter Scott in his 1814 novel, Waverly. The term Mirkwood derives from the forest Myrkviðr of Norse mythology; that forest has been identified by scholars as representing a wooded region of Ukraine at the time of the wars between the Goths and the Huns in the fourth century.

The ban on "Green Dragon" is another one I would think unenforceable because it has been used many times as a descriptive term for a dragon that was the color green. The Green Dragon is one of the four Dragon Kings in ancient Chinese religion even.

The problem was probably the tie-in with the movie.

Well, I sure didn't buy Best Brown #2 or Bob's Chocolate Plug for their suspiciously scatological sounding names, but Cult Blood Red Moon and Haunted Bookshop definitely had my interest from the moment I saw the labels. What can I say, I like spooky stuff! 😅

Thankfully they all ended up being very good blends, and even with my mouth chemistry's general intolerance to Burley I think I'll always love Haunted Bookshop until the day my ghost is haunting some old bookstore too.

But Black Frigate still sounds awesome. Not saying I wouldn't have tried it if it indeed were called Purple Elephant Fluffbunny though. Great to see you still here. Sent you a message.

Good to see you're back Anthony...and alive and well after all. It's been whispered for years now that you had become just another skull in @Chasing Embers collection (albeit a bearded one).

And since he's done nothing to dispel the rumor (and even seemed to encourage it at one time) it became generally accepted as the tragic explanation for your disappearance.

I was just lost at sea. Fell overboard and hit my noggin. Going to try to visit the forums more often. I'm just happy so many of you are still here posting.

I don't suppose you might be willing to share the raw image without the tin background for this for people to print off and use as jar labels? I'm thinking I might like to officially change the name on my jar of Samuel Gawith Fire Dance Flake to Purple Elephant Fluffbunny! With the sweet blackberry brandy and vanilla flavor I feel like the name fits. :ROFLMAO:

*Edited to remove the drop shadow on the circle for better label printing. Same file name in case you already saved it a few minutes ago.

I found it kind of off putting when a blend had a number for a name and thus ignored a lot of McClelland tobaccos for years because of that stupid reason. Thank goodness I tried them out before they went away, and stocked up.
Yeh, but the name was never 5200. The name was Red Cake. When I first got here, I only called it Red Cake, but people had no idea what I was talking about. Numbers suck, but people just demand to use them.
Same with the Peterson Pipes. I just ignore the Pete nerds who want to know what number a pipe is. It's being nerdy to show off how nerdy someone is.

Like Dunhill pipe sizes... they are the number size for the overall pipe size, NOT the bowls.
