The 1lb Sutliff bags are polyester (Mylar is a brand name for a polyester film), but not foil laminate. I would not recommend using them for long-term storage, but under good conditions, they could keep the contents viable for a year or longe
Well due to the rush of buying and stocking the cellars before the unknown, I never touched anything bigger than 1 pound bags. I just looked at one of my open pound mac baren plum cake and even it’s starting to dry.
So I’m looking for solutions before it becomes a problem.
If there is a bag you recommend, I’d love to have a link for it so I could get it instead of just looking around on Amazon.

If you are going to buy something, I would go with mason jars

a couple of 5 pound bags would take a LOT of mason jars.
Even a single 5 pound bag would take a lot of mason jars.

I think the 5lb Sutliff’s bags use differ plastic to the 1lb. I’ve never purchased one, just from what I have seen written here
Yeah me either. I have never seen or held one.

If you are set on going with Mylar, I’d suggest the heavier bags from Discount Mylar Bags. You will also need a bag sealer.

Hello everyone,

Since the offerings in Belgium are relatively basic, I am planning a small trip abroad to purchase some better tobacco.
The brands I'm planning to purchase are G. L. Pease, Cornell & Diehl, and HU Tobacco.

I do have some experience with cigars by now, but regarding pipe tobacco, I'm still early in the learning curve...

I do plan to buy about 20 tins. But what would be the way to go:
Buy single tins of 20 different blends - as to first explore everything, and stock up later on with my favorites?
Or should I limit myself to, say, 10 blends, but buy 2 of each - one to open, and one to cellar?

Thanks in advance for all ideas/advice...

Happy holidays!
David
Keep in mind what you try and don't care for straight out of the freshly opened tin may be appealing in just a few days. ex. A week ago, I opened a can of C&D Red Stag freshly opened I thought I hope I can find someone who likes this stuff. Today I tried it again and it's great.

Is there a science to that? Let it air out and dry out a bit?
Never thought to ask or look into it because I smoke a tin pretty quickly. Does it continue to age/flavor in a tin?

Even a single 5 pound bag would take a lot of mason jars.
Flake or cube cut can be put in two square wide mouth pint jars at 1 pound/ 2 jars. Ribbon cut can be put in one of the same jars at 1 pound/ 1 jar with the aid of a caulk gun.

Here's half a pound of 2014 Superior Navy Flake where I cut the flakes in half.

As much as I don’t like glass jars, I wish I’d have thought about that. I have about 3/4th pound of Ennerdale just sitting in a large bag becoming stale…..

So in vacuum sealed tins, they are good until opened.
Is there any other need to safe guard them as well?
Normally I wouldn’t be asking but since the upset of the status quo with Sutliff/mac going awol….. it wasn’t until now I have super stocked the cellars. Worried about future quality of the backy.

I guess I could put the unopened tins into something like a ziplock bag or something.

I really don't know. Being an old fart I am of the belief that trying to incorporate too much science into pipe smoking as so many do takes away from the sheer enjoyment of the experience.

Yeah. I’ve never really enjoyed all the facts, but knowing them is sometimes helpful.
Just trying to get a feel for what I need to do so preserve the beautiful limited stuff we can get while we can. I’d like to be able in 20 years say, I made the right decision and preserved them the best I could.
