The two main political parties in the US have both been kicking the fiscal tin can down the road for quite awhile. At some point there will need to be changes.
Any increase in tobacco taxes will be under the radar of 90%+ of the general population and, so really, a no brainer politically.
It will be charges to entitlements that will grab the public’s attention, not tobacco.
As with so many more important things, “these are the good old days”, particularly in regards pipe tobacco.
All this be as it may, we will need to wait and see what actually transpires.

If my math is correct, that would make a 2 oz tin about $17

I have seen similar stuff for the past couple of years. I am convinced that it will happen sooner or later along with restrictions on internet sales. Its really a shame and will hamper the entry of new enthusiasts.

I personally would not be effected much as I have been on a tobacco purchasing binge for the past few years because of this and deeming talk. I've beefed up my cellar to a point where I only "need" a few purchases every couple of months.

Cellar now and often. It will never be as cheap, as available, or as diverse as it is now. :(

I agree with the general sentiment that things are going in this direction, and cellaring is wise. However, if past performance is any indicator, this one is not likely to pass. Big increase like this have been introduced recently and have not passed.

We are all acclimated to the FDA deeming thing and expect further draconian legislation, but the FDA deeming is really big tobacco’s attempt to wrangle the vaping upstarts more than anything else. A big tax bill, on the other hand, would be detrimental to big tobacco.

My money says this bill goes nowhere, and we are safe on the 1,000+% tax increase... for now.

Currently, I'm keeping a one year cellar-supply of Prince Albert on hand - to combat future taxes, and, any more halts in production from Middleton.

I smoke one 14 ounce tub per month; so that ties up roughly $475.00; and, I'll keep that 'One Year' ahead tactic in play, until the impeding taxes get abusive; then, I'll just put the pipe down, as I hate being a pawn of political posers more than I love my dear nicotine - Sherm Natman

Not as if I needed another reason/excuse to make another TAD purchase, but I just took advantage of the 15% off C&D sale at Tobacco Pipes to grab a dozen tins of various blends I had been meaning to try.

My pipe tobacco philosophy is that I will grow old smoking what I want when I want. Knowing myself, a frugal SOB, I'm unwilling to pay exorbitant prices in the future and would be inclined to buy whatever is cheap and thus potentially of a lesser quality tobacco and that ain't happening. Couple my frugalness with a mild case of prepperness and I'll continue to stock the war reserves with high quality stuff at a price that will never be cheaper here and now and if/when things go sideways I'll officially retire from buying.
