No reason why women shouldn't smoke a pipe. There were several women active on Yahoo Pipesmokers2 back when I first joined. They formed a group called Ladies of the Briar for women to share their experiences. It's still around; I have no idea how active it is.

RE: Smaller pipes - as is the conventional wisdom, if you want a shorter smoke, simply don't fill the bowl all the way. :D
As to whether or not women should smoke pipes, well....I'm sure you can imagine my stance on that, no need to add more to that aspect of the conversation. Smoke 'em if you got 'em, ladies. :puffy:

I don't know about you, but most of the contact I've had with some of the major internet tobacconists is with the women owners, either solely owned or couple owned and run. Many of these would be great resources for interviews. I'm sure there are many women who run estate sales and are extremely knowledgeable about pipe values.

I don't really believe that everything has to be gender specific. I don't think men should wear dress and carry purse. But if a guy wants I don't care if he does. Lots of people think women shouldn't be tattooed, personally I find a women covered in tattoos beautiful, much more so then one without. So if a woman wants to smoke a pipe, let her. Doesn't affect my life any. It's a bit of an odd sight, since it isn't as common for women to smoke a pipe, but who cares?

Good read, thanks. The part about
One of her passions was photography, and her pipe expressed her vitality. Everyone smoked it at University.
I'm assuming it is implied tobacco. Sounds like she did it openly so I wonder why this the only article (that I have read) that will touch on the subject.

Well, that was entertaining. I'm smoking a bowl and I just looked at myself in the mirror. I don't think I look silly at all.

Prominent woman pipe smoker?
ME!!!
Seriously though, I don't think its gender/sex related. It depends on the guy or gal if he or she feels inclined.

Absolutely!
And +1 @flakeyjakey
We're all famous in some circle or another. To my grandchildren, for instance, I'm the most awesome pipesmoking old man they know!
/raises his bowl to the women among us :puffy:

In the sticks in Mississippi
This is an interesting thread that I had missed, but am glad to see bumped back.

My wife has been smoking a pipe right along with me since the early 1980s. We were living in southern CA at the time, and given the mix of people living there, not many raised an eyebrow to seeing her walk down Melrose Ave. window shopping with a pipe in her mouth. I guess the punk rockers were far more entertaining to watch. I'll admit I smoke more than she does, but come cool weather she'll be right there on the porch, or on her cousins porch smoking right along with us. I show her things from this site that I think she'd like, and she enjoys it, but I guess she just wants to smoke a pipe rather than read about it for the most part. Sometimes we get the chance to go Jackson and the Country Squire Tobacco shop and smoke a bowl with the nice folks there. Last visit there was a young woman smoking a pipe too, and she and my wife were glad to see two females there.

FYI, my wife has an old pickaxe pipe that is long and skinny, she has always referred to it as her "witches" pipe. So I guess she's a witch too, which should set some minds at ease, you know only witches should smoke pipes.... :nana:
Here she is last Christmas with her Tinder Box Verona

I think smoking a pipe is classy and an homage to history no matter who smokes them male or female. Considering the smoking of tobacco in a pipe is the oldest method of tobacco consumption I would assume through out history many famous, powerful women smoked pipes.
As for us being a dying breed I have introduced three friends to pipe smoking, so that's not too bad they range from 30's to 50's.

"innate differences"
There aren't that many. Behavior - and differences - are learned, not innate. They vary from culture to culture. We teach our kids what are "male" and "female" behaviors. My 2 month old grandson has no idea of what are "male" or "female" behaviors, because he hasn't learned yet what is appropriate for his culture. [:puffy:]
That's quite the can of worms...

I haven't seen very many examples of "boys will be what they were told to be" instead of "boys will be boys".

Of course environment has an effect, but I digress.
I still have to note the fact that Nicotine causes severe birth defects. If you're sure that you're not going to get pregnant any time soon, then I guess it's no harm, so for older ladies we can be safe in assuming it's ok, but in general people tend to be less careful than they should.

I would prefer not to see women smoking as a cultural norm.

Not every woman is a breeder. I agree that should I ever find myself pregnant, then I'm going to have to put off a whole bunch of habits until the baby is out.
But seeing as that's not gonna be an option, I'm going to be at the forefront of this new cultural norm ;)
