Never cared much for Lane era Charatan pipes myself as their size/shapes fall outside my preferred range. Always heard the Pre-Lane Reuben era pipes were more traditional in shape and typically ran on the smaller side. Don't see those nearly as often but I think one has piqued my interest!
That (rather circuitously) brings me to my point of interest - the Charatan twin-bore stem. The 1951 catalog features it as an available option, listed as their "Solid Bite Mouthpiece".

Does anyone have access to a pre-1950 catalog? I'm curious about when they introduced that style stem.
Also, if you have a Charatan with the Solid Bite mouthpiece, post up a pic!

I actually ended up having to pass on the Charatan I had been eyeballing. An hour before the auction ended I noticed a hairline crack in the shank.
Maybe one day..

It sure wasn't. Definitely not a "pipe guy".
I had sent a question to him earlier in the week about the pipe and he replied quickly.

When I inquired about the crack an hour before it ended he never (and still hasn't) replied. Someone put a last second bid in for it - hope they noticed the crack too.

I didn't want to have my money tied up just to inspect it in person.

Hahaha... that last second bidder was me. I just messaged the seller asking for a return shipping label (although the pipe has not yet arrived). Glad I saw this post. Bummed I did not see the crack before bidding.

Great blast wasn't it?
Couldn't see a CP logo on the stem either..
Would you mind posting a link to th eended auction ?
I'd much like to see the pipe.
Here ya go - Charatan
The picture of the underside/nomenclature is where you can see the crack. It runs above the shape number. I never noticed it on my phone. It wasn't until I looked at the photo on my laptop that I blew the pic up large enough to see it.
Thank you ! Wonderful blast on this one and the crack clearly shows.
Most sandblasted Ch. had a rusticated stem.
See if I can retrieve a Solid Bite one from the Charatan trunk.

I've never seen a Charatan with a rusticated stem, unless it was owned by a beaver. They would sometimes "rusticate' the end of the shank where the blast was very shallow, just to continue the sense of texture up to the join with the stem, and they weren't the only maker to do that.

Hi Jesse ,
Unfortunately Ken is dwelling in greener pastures now , so we cannot ask him.
That is to say not via the usual channels.
I recall it being a topic of discussion on the forums once and I've seen quite a few of them.
Not a clue why one would rusticate the stem of a sandblasted stummel ?
