browns can be found anywhere in the streambed lol, hope you like that rubbed mixture.Yep, I tied for bass and bluegill - I thought I tied some decent stuff, but always felt like I had some margin for error vs. the trout or salmon fly fishers, lol. Nothing more satisfying than catching one on a fly I tied and a rod I put together! Went on my first guided fly fishing trip in the Black Hills a couple of summers ago and caught my first brown (and a beauty) on the tiniest little fly in a tiny little stream you wouldn't think had fish in it - FUN!
The bass get poppers, the pike and muskie get a somewhat bigger meal.

yeah man...deer hair works on any water , I like those!I almost forgot the trout. They get anything from a size 10-20 and almost always a dry fly.View attachment 123979

Not mine, but my Dad's work. His last few years were dedicated to tying flies and hair jigs for our local steelhead crowd. He did this big Spey flies mostly for show. I asked him to make me an orange one, since it's my favorite color, and he made this and framed it up for me. I keep it on the mantle, under his biggest steelhead.

After he died, I had $1000s worth of tying stuff. I had to sell it so my mom could cover bills. I kept hundreds of flies and jigs, and sold a few to the local bait shop. Then, I just traded bait for the rest because it made my heart happy to see Dad's stuff getting used. I have maybe 100 various flies and jigs for my own use left. I did keep and frame this display, though

It was 12 or 13 years ago when he made it, so I don't remember how long it took him, but he liked the challenge of the Spey flies and tied hundreds of them. A lot were smaller and in patterns that the local guys used for steelhead here in Ohio, but he tied around 20 larger ones like the one in the picture, with really rare and unique material, which he framed and sold, or gave to me and my 4 siblings.nice...that fly takes more than an afternoon to tye. That's advice I give every rookie fisherman I meet. If you're not snagging, you're not catching. At what flies and lures go for retail, I certainly don't blame people for having some trepidation.View attachment 124101
I’ve tied all my own flies for years. I lose too many to buy then retail. Besides, what would I do all winter if I didn’t tie? You can only reload so much ammo. A great old fisherman told me 40 years ago that if I wasn’t losing flies, I wasn’t fishing where the fish are.
It has definitely aged enough! I almost hate to open it, but I figure I'll transfer some to a smaller jar soon and I'm sure I'll love it!browns can be found anywhere in the streambed lol, hope you like that rubbed mixture.
Nothing ugly about those brother very nice ? those parachutes are hard to tie but I like them
AlanH, thank you sir! I’ve been at it for a long while now, so they are much easier to tie nowadays ?? They really get hard to do on anything smaller than a size 18 hook though. But they float like a battleship ?Nothing ugly about those brother very nice ? those parachutes are hard to tie but I like them
